A New York Times Bestseller
A
New York Times and NPR Best Book of the Year

"This hushed suspense tale about thwarted dreams of escape may be her best one yet...its own kind of masterpiece." --Maureen Corrigan,
The Washington Post

A "taut, chiseled and propulsive" (
Vogue) novel from the author of the forthcoming novel The Hunter and the bestselling mystery writer who "is in a class by herself." (The New York Times)

Cal Hooper thought a fixer-upper in a bucolic Irish village would be the perfect escape. After twenty-five years in the Chicago police force and a bruising divorce, he just wants to build a new life in a pretty spot with a good pub where nothing much happens. But when a local kid whose brother has gone missing arm-twists him into investigating, Cal uncovers layers of darkness beneath his picturesque retreat, and starts to realize that even small towns shelter dangerous secrets.

"One of the greatest crime novelists writing today"
(Vox) weaves a masterful, atmospheric tale of suspense, asking what we sacrifice in our search for truth and justice, and what we risk if we don't.

"The west of Ireland looked good to Cal Hooper on the internet. But now that he’s living there, the rugged beauty of the region overwhelms him, as it will anyone reading Tana French’s
The Searcher, an audacious departure for this immensely talented author… Not to be missed." —Janet Maslin, The New York Times

—Harlan Coben

“Taut, chiseled and propulsive."
—Vogue

"French's writing here is on fire. Eerie and nuanced and spellbinding."
—Fresh Air

“French avoids the fireworks of conventional crime fiction, instead taking a classic setup—the lone outsider revealing the dark side of a small town—and imbuing it with simmering menace. There’s also an unexpectedly moving friendship and storytelling so atmospheric you can practically smell the peat bogs.”
People

“The perfect cold-weather escape…French’s writing style is so unhurried and pleasurable…and every page smells and sounds like Ireland. At a time when travel is impossible and we’re spending more time at home, staying safe, it’s thrilling to be transported to another place entirely, gripped by suspense and a sense of danger as I turn the pages in my cozy lair.”
Glamour

“Nuanced and compelling.”
—The New Yorker

“Thriller mastermind Tana French's . . . work is as consistently thoughtful and thought-provoking as it is entertaining...[In

"French takes this standalone novel at a measured pace, easing readers into Cal's quiet life before the thrills unravel."

The Searcher feels different from French’s previous books—there’s a sparseness to the setting that contrasts with the bustle of the Dublin Murder Squad, or even the gathered family in The Witch Elm—but is no less addictive; the pages practically turn themselves.” The Seattle Times

"A creepy slow burn that focuses just as much on the central characters’ inner lives as on the mystery at the heart of the story . . .packed full of twists, turns, and shocking reveals.”
—BuzzFeed

"All things atmospheric and mysterious, this one may keep you up past your bedtime.”
Cosmopolitan

"A moving new tale of friendship and healing, set in an Irish countryside populated with eccentrics, curmudgeons, and a hilariously weird British woman obsessed with fairies."

“The queen of crime returns with a thriller about a retired Chicago police officer who discovers the sinister underbelly of a seemingly quaint Irish town.”
Entertainment Weekly

“In
The Searcher, Tana French stakes out new territory: a rural Irish setting quite different from the urban and suburban Ireland of her previous works, and a central character who is an American . . . The Searcher blends qualities of French’s best novels, the first and third of her “Dublin Murder Squad” police procedurals . . .”—Los Angeles Review of Books

“Readers who share her interest in exploring the lives of flawed and compelling characters will find much to love in the atmospheric story of a retired cop who moves to Ireland for relaxation, only to be asked to find a missing teen.”
– St Louis Post-Dispatch.

“As always, French’s prose is spellbinding and lyrical . . . The beautiful imagery combined with the dialect of the earthly, witty characters creates an appealing atmosphere that engages the reader . . ."

Introspective and Nuanced
Each time I crack open a Tana French book I know I’m in the hands of a master storyteller. Her latest novel, the standalone The Searcher, follows retired Chicago police officer Cal Hooper as he seeks a new and simpler life in Ireland’s remote Ardnakelty village.French’s writing has always had a cinematic quality that’s at once atmospheric and immersive. Her characters are deeply layered, often flawed or unlikeable (as in The Witch Elm). French reveals her characters slowly, providing psychological insights through seemingly mundane details. At times, these nuggets provide subtle social commentary, but always fit the character and never come across preachy. Here, we don’t know why Cal really has chosen remote Ireland, and question if he is running from something, a scandal. We wonder why he makes an effort to keep his police background hidden from his new neighbors. We slowly begin to learn more about Cal, who becomes inexorably drawn into the search for a missing young man. As he looks into the disappearance, Cal begins to peel back the layers of the bucolic village and benign neighbors of his new home. These parallel developments serve as effective counterpoints that propel the plot and tension.I think The Searchers ranks up there with The Likeness as among the best of French’s works, but can understand how polarizing this book is for fans of her earlier works - especially if they expected something akin to the Dublin Murder Squad books. This is not that! I thought the pacing here was elegant (some feel plodding), the writing evocative (some feel unnecessary), and the story and its larger themes satisfying (some feel boring). In a world increasingly more fractious and searching for comfort in black and white, The Searchers treads in gray.

The plot line was well done by a very accomplished author. Very relatable & believable storyline about a retired cop moving to Ireland & discovering that people & problems exist everywhere. The characters are well developed & the author’s ability to describe the setting is superb. I am now a loyal fan of Tanya French!

4 Stars for this slow burn Tana French thriller.

SUMMARY
Cal had recently retired from the Chicago police department and was dumped by his wife. With all that change / new found freedom, he felt the need to start over. He had always dreamed of living abroad in a quite country house, spending his days fishing and enjoying a slow paced life. He decided to move to the Irish countryside, bought a rundown house at a bargain price and began fixing it up.

Shortly after moving, Cal had a feeling someone was watching him. Eventually, he discovered his thirteen year old neighbor, Trey, lurking about, watching him. Finally, Trey opened up and admitted hearing about Cals background as a police officer and is requested his help. Trey's older brother, Brendan, walked out of the house one day several months ago, without a goodbye, and never returned. Trey seemed to be the only person concerned about Brendan's disappearance. Trey's mother was no help, insisting that Brendan left their small town to find a more exciting life in a bigger city. Most young adults leave as soon as possible because there are very few job opportunities in their small town. It made sense that he would leave too. Since Brendan was nineteen, the police basically said the same thing, and didn't start an investigation. But Trey did not believe, even for a minute, that Brendan would just leave with no explanation or goodbye. The two of them had always been so close!

Reluctantly, after much persuasion, Cal agreed to help Trey. But the more he searched, the more resistance he received and the less Brendan's unexplained departure made sense. Cal quickly found himself pulled back into the kind of situation he left his job and country to avoid.

WHAT I LOVED
I'm a huge fan of both Brit-Lit and Tana French so it would be hard for me to not love this book. The Irish countryside descriptions made me want to visit Ireland again ASAP.

The story was full of complicated relationships which I love (in books only, not real life). Cal was struggling with his relationship with his ex-wife, still baffled by why she ended their marriage. He adored his adult daughter but, at times, had trouble navigating their relationship without the help his ex. He and Trey started out a little shaky, watching their relationship develop was one of the main draws of the plot. As a newcomer in a tight knit small town, Cal spent quite a bit of time trying to figure out the "do's and don'ts" of the unwritten rules which clearly governed all interactions. It was quite complicated and very interesting.

The tension grew as the story progressed. As Cal was learning the afore mentioned town rules, he was trying to discretely question people about Brendan and his whereabouts. I never knew who was involved and which conversation could have been the one that could have put Trey or Cal in danger. It was like watching Cal wander through a field of landmines blindfolded.

WHAT I DIDN'T LOVE
I still miss the Dublin Murder Squad series. Those books were soooooo good! Plus I miss the consistency of coming back to the same setting and revisiting the same set of characters. I loved the way a character would play a major role in one book and then be a minor character in another. It was kind of genius. It allowed the feel of a series but never got boring or repetitive.

This book has over 450 pages, which in itself is not a problem but it was very slow in places. I understand that the slowness of the story reflected the slower pace of Cal's new life, and it really worked as a literary device, but probably about fifty to seventy-five pages of mundane daily life stuff could have been cut and the same feeling would have been achieved.

The ending left one major issue hanging a little. I feel Tana French was leading us to believe one specific conclusion but I'm not that evolved. I really like my ending completely spelled out AND it's an extra bonus for me if there is also an epilogue with the next several years mapped out.

OVERALL
This is a well written, slow burn, dark thriller. Fans of Tana French may be still lamenting the end of the Dublin Murder Squad series, but it's still a solid stand alone read and shows how Tana French has branched out and grown as a writer.

Characters are rich in complexity and surprise; the environment is living, filled out in language unexpected and beautiful; the arc of the story never wavers although suspense is created with meandering detail. Absolutely joy to read.

I am struggling to finish this book, as it's not a compelling mystery and I really don't see the point of the "search". Although well written, I don't find the characters particularly interesting, either. It does take you into the Irish countryside, but other than that it's too long and boring to me.

The characters in this story are full, rich beings living in an extraordinarily vivid landscape. Sorrowful lives. Twisted. Odd bits of kindness and fun and simple meals and a good amount of restoration, both home repair and emotional healing. Reading the book late at night, I could smell the mist and hear the rooks (Corvus frugilegus) chattering in their tree outside Cal's house.

The searcher in this Tana French story is a recently-divorced, recently-retired Chicago cop who has bought a small farmhouse with a patch of land near a very rural village in Ireland. Why? Because it's isolated and he really does want to get away from the life he had--you might say he was searching for what he wanted the rest of his life to be.

The old farmhouse is structurally sound but a total mess. Everything has to be redone, from electrical to plumbing, to wallpaper and paint. He has virtually no furniture and is starting from scratch to build that new life.

The writing of every novel is a combination of character, place, plot, and context. Who are these people, where are they, why are they where they are, and why are they doing the stuff they do. So the author has to balance color, or motivation, with plot movement.

In "The Searcher," Tana French has focused more on background and color than plot movement. As a result, although it's a great story, we're much more involved with learning the who and why than we are in the what.

While our protagonist, Cal Hooper, is focused on stripping wallpaper and refinishing an old desk, what he assumes is a young teenage boy appears at his cottage. He enlists the help of the boy, Trey, on his project as much to engage him as anything.
It turns out the boy has something on his mind, and is looking for help. Word has gotten around that Cal is an ex-cop, and the kid, Trey, has a mystery for which he's seeking answers. Trey's older (19) brother has gone missing. One day he was there, and the next he wasn't. Trey is searching for answers and wants Cal's help.

What unravels is the story of how Cal at first rejects Trey's pleas for help, but finally agrees. Almost immediately, Cal starts getting pushback from the community, and most specifically from his closest neighbor. Without saying it directly, they're saying, "Leave is alone."

Along the way there are surprises, as one would expect, that I'm not going to reveal to you. That'd spoil your fun in learning for yourself. You'll have to read it for yourself to see.

As I said previously, Tana French has focused on character and place development, but she does it masterfully. You grow to like and hate the characters for who and what they are, as they move through the storyline to its conclusion. You'll like Cal, our protagonist, but not too much. He's no Superman--he's flesh and blood with foibles like other humans. He makes mistakes, and sometimes he's unsure of what he should do--unsure of what is "right" and what isn't.

In the end, I'm glad I read The Searcher. I think you will be, too.

Tana French is a consumate writer! Searcher was a different novel than her previous ones. But beautifully so. Slowly building in the beginning, lazy even, but I was drawn in by her eloquent writing and the confidence that she was taking me somewhere captivating.
And the drama and suspense began.
Retired U.S. cop settling in a small Irish town, renovating an ancient cottage, free to wander the green hills, fish the waters, enjoy his quiet solitude. Then, the suspense begins. Someone watching him, he discovers its a young boy. He gets slowly drawn in to this child’s life, his need to find an older brother, disappeared. And the darkness, twistedness, violence of this bucolic little village creeps in, and eventually explodes. And relationships, discoveries, grief, transformation, and beauty occurs in the unravelling of this dark mystery.
I loved this novel. True Tana French. She is a master!
