The age of exploration is not over.

When Adam Shoalts ventured into the largest unexplored wilderness on the planet, he hoped to set foot where no one had ever gone before. What he discovered surprised even him.

Shoalts was no stranger to the wilderness. He had hacked his way through jungles and swamp, had stared down polar bears and climbed mountains. But one spot on the map called out to him irresistibly: the Hudson Bay Lowlands, a trackless expanse of muskeg and lonely rivers, caribou and wolf - an Amazon of the north, parts of which to this day remain unexplored.

Cutting through this forbidding landscape is a river no explorer, trapper, or canoeist had left any record of paddling. It was this river that Shoalts was obsessively determined to explore.

It took him several attempts, and years of research. But finally, alone, he found the headwaters of the mysterious river. He believed he had discovered what he had set out to find. But the adventure had just begun. Unexpected dangers awaited him downstream.

Gripping and often poetic, Alone Against the North is a classic adventure story of single-minded obsession, physical hardship, and the restless sense of wonder that every explorer has in common.

But what does exploration mean in an age when satellite imagery of even the remotest corner of the planet is available to anyone with a phone? Is there anything left to explore?

What Shoalts discovered as he paddled downriver was a series of unmapped waterfalls that could easily have killed him. Just as astonishing was the media reaction when he got back to civilization. He was crowned “Canada’s Indiana Jones” and appeared on morning television. He was feted by the Royal Canadian Geographical Society and congratulated by the Governor General. People were enthralled by Shoalts’s proof that the world is bigger than we think.

Shoalts’s story makes it clear that the world can become known only by getting out of our cars and armchairs, and setting out into the unknown, where every step is different from the one before, and something you may never have imagined lies around the next curve in the river.

Amazing! Couldn't put it down. What a great, well written read. Starting with a brief overview of exploration to the single minded focus and determination it takes to see a goal through to fruition, Adam has the vision and ability to execute it - not an easy task. Nothing was going to get in the way of fulfilling his obsession of canoeing the length of the deadly Again River. Not even polar bears that stalk and hunt you down, inescapable swarms of blood thirsty mosquitos and blackflies that blacken the sky, or partners that can't cope with all the hardships and fear of being on the trail, hundreds of miles away from help where the slightest mistake can cost you everything. This book is a testament that there are still capable and hardy men out there that live to explore and push the limits of physical and mental endurance to achieve their goals.

After reading this book you will want to get up off the couch and go do something epic too.

I have rated this book mediocre at best. Interesting in some parts and boring in others. I do think that if one ever decided to take an extreme wilderness trip you would want to go with a man like the author. He is a a rigid, extremely tough person never questioning that he could "give up" during extremely trying times of the expedition. And he did it alone! For his discipline in his decision making during the trip I'm giving him 4 Stars.

Loved this book start to finish. I fell right into his adventures with him and got lost in the wilderness in my mind..... His descriptions of the beauty and hardships he experienced will stay with me long after the book ended. The history he weaves into the story is enthralling. Can't wait for his next book!

The book was in great condition and arrived according to schedule. The story was good as well. For some reason, I expected something different than the way it was told. Nevertheless, I admire this guy (the author).

I purchased my copy in Vancouver B.C. The author has great facility with words, thus he is quite able to recount his harrowing journey.

It is hard to fathom that man has not explored all of Canada. Lakes ,rivers, moose, elk, and polar bears all inhabit the land which the author explored.
I highly recommend this book, it will open your eyes and perhaps ignite a desire to explore .

Wanted to like the book as I am into exploring and the outdoors. It was a frustrating read. Exciting at times, droll as can be at others. I never really felt like I was along for the journey. I feel a truly good read must at the very least make you feel that way.

The Hudson Bay Lowlands are a remote and challenging environment that very few Canadians ever get to experience personally, but Alone Against the North takes you right there. I really liked the blending of adventure story, history, and ecology. Great read.

My dad is into outdoor books so I pick this one for him. He rates it 4 out of 5. The descriptions are vividly clear with grit and determination clear through the book. If you aren’t into hard wilderness trips this is a good book to take you places you won’t go on your own

4.0 out of 5 stars An inspiring read.

In an world that technology is shrinking day by day it is remarkable that genuinely unexplored wilderness still exists in North America.

This book follows Adam Shoalts as he explores the insect infested, boggy lowlands off Hudson Bay, including identifying and charting a previously un-named river.

It tells of the up and downs of trying to set up an expedition, and gives some insight into the trips he used to gain experience and funding beforehand

The book is not only a fascinating journey of his trips but nods respectfully to the history of explorers that have inspired him since an early age. He clearly respects that he is “standing on the shoulders of giants”.

From swarms of black flies to enormous Polar Bears, often dragging his canoe for miles over strength sapping terrain in freezing temperatures, Shoalts tells his story in an engaging and informative style.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book and have already ordered “A History of Canada in 10 Maps” as a result.

This writer has a keen sense of adventure coupled with an excellent knowledge of the history and geography of the Canadian North. His courage and resolve on these very difficult canoe/overland trips is remarkable. He proves his doubters wrong every time he heads out. His survival and story-telling skills are first rate.
