I am shocked at how quickly this book affected my life. I am self-employed in a high-level leadership role and have 2 children. Dealing with burnout has been a constant challenge. I found myself frustrated with time, but much more so that even when I had time, I didn't have the energy to do anything with it. I've read everything I can find, worked on health habits and mindfulness, attended retreats, etc etc etc - but still felt exhausted and burnt out most of the time. This book offers a very real look at the demands we all have upon us in modern life, and offers legitimate solutions.Implementing the strategies taught has made a massive change in my life and business. A much needed book for me because I couldn’t find time to do anything. I felt so busy doing things. At your best helped me realize my green yellow and red zones
Reviewed in the United States on May 17, 2022
I like Nieuwhof (sp) and his writing and podcasts. He can be a little to 'how to grow your church to 1 billion' for me, but this book (and his previous about burnout) was honestly perfect for where I'm at in life.

I'm a 38 year old husband, dad, and pastor (while also trying to be an individual and a friend). The constant pressure for the first three can be nauseating. Be the best, sacrificial, hard-working, loving husband. Be a patient, present, engaged, funny, firm, loving dad. Crush it at work, write books, publish podcasts, grow your church.

The book is all about finding the best time of day that you work (everyone's going to be different; mine I think is between 8am-12pm). Then identifying what the most important work is for your job. Some of the ideas resonate with Deep Work by Cal Newport.

The line that brought me to tears (literally) was on p. 103 "Challenge 3: I've got young kids or a difficult family situation." As a dad of three kids (9, 7 and 4), this was solid. He says this: "While there are some successful authors, podcasters, and speakers who have young kids at home... it might not be realistic or wise for you to set enormous goals for yourself if your free time is regularly spoken for. That's okay -- and here's the clutch line -- Having a great family life and a strong marriage is an excellent goal."

He goes on a bit more, but then concludes with this (which gives me chills reading again): "If your situation is young kids or teenagers who need your love and attention, adjust your expectations and play the long game. It always pays off."

Thanks Carey and everyone who helped with content, research and writing.

Lots of really helpful ideas, advice, and questions about managing your energy levels. Carey gives a helpful addition to the time management conversation.

I do think this could be an article instead of a book…but you can say that about almost any non-fiction book.

I've followed Carey on his blog/emails, and podcast for years, but this book didn't really strike me as interesting - until I just changed jobs last week. And man, let me tell you, he nailed it! His writing and ideas were clear, concise, but oh so relevant to my own personal situation. It could not have come at a more serendipitous time for me, and I'm grateful for this work. I think his own personal connection to the subject matter really gave this material the teeth and bite that drove home the principles and realities many of us are currently facing. Also, some pretty funny parts as well that added levity to an otherwise fairly intense topic. I will be referencing this book steadily over the course of the next year as I revamp my life, time, calendar, and schedule. BONUS* I usually get the Audible versions to go along with my books to facilitate more efficacious connection and consumption of the material - Carey's performance on the Audible version was great as well, so I highly recommend either or both for added effect! Thanks, Carey!

It may be that I was just ready for this book because I’ve read so many over the years on the same topic … but it was the best productivity book ever. Every other book says to do your hard , important work during your most productive times. But Carey puts this to life by helping you assess specifically when these times are (green, yellow and red zones.) He then goes a step further to help the reader assess what kinds of work - belong in each zone. Because he understands ministry and leadership so well, his teaching is so practical. And finally he reminds the reader not to try to short cut the system by making yourself believe you have longer green zones than others. A very few hours a day is adequate when used routinely and the right work is chosen for those time periods. I am grateful! Thank you Carey!

I believe we are in a "busyness pandemic". A time where we feel in order to be productive, we have to check off as many things on our "To-Do" list in one day that we possibly can. This leads to a never ending "stress spiral" that is not sustainable and makes you more and more miserable. I realized this a few years ago and started putting new systems in place to help get me out of the "stress spiral" and find joy in life again. This book was the icing on the cake. I was able to identify my Green, Yellow and Red zones as described in the book and made some slight changes in when I do things with huge results. Not only am much more productive in my Green Zone, but I feel less stress and more joy at work and at home. No matter where you are in the "busyness pandemic", this book will help you put systems in place to be more productive, find your passion, and have a greater impact.

I am younger leader in his mid-thirties who is trying my best to navigate work, life, family, marriage etc… all in the shadow of post Covid-19 world. This book was a God-send for me. I’ve read tons of books and articles on self care, leadership, and time-management. And to be honest, I usually find those sorts of books leaving me feeling like I’m always going to fall short. NOT THIS BOOK! Nieuwhof writes from the place of vulnerability of his own burn out and struggle to escape the stress cycle. Nieuwhof helpfully pays attention to our limitations in a way that helps the reader hardest the gifts they have. If you’re looking for a book that will help you lead and work in your humanity— and not apart from it—- then this is the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A book written in lived wisdom
Reviewed in Australia on November 21, 2021
When we say we ought learn from our mistakes and then go to say the wise learn from others, well it takes generous people to share their mistakes and more importantly how they have grown and corrected them.

That is this book. Mismanaging our time, energy, passions and resources and sleeping in the bed of those consequences is common to just about everyone. So we all stand to learn (and I have learned and begun implementing) what this book says.

The advice here is written with humility and a teaching heart that says, "let's learn from my mistakes".

Very good, very good value. Thank you for writing it.

I love what Carey puts out - whether podcasts, blogs, or in this case book. I have worked in leadership positions for many years but currently have begun homeschooling my children (twins 8 and 10 year old). As I began unpacking this book for myself, I realized the value of my kids learning these principles. I tailored the material for them and had them do the worksheets provided. We are actually restructuring our school day based on our green zones. Game changer! I love that I am giving my kids skills that will set them up for success as adults. Carey is an amazing communicator whose curiosity unlocks learning opportunities in unexpected places. Highly recommend this book and his podcast!
