What Got You Here Won't Get You There: How Successful People Become Even More Successful Audible Audiobook – Abridged

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 4,312 ratings

What's holding you back? Your hard work is paying off. You are doing well in your field. But there is something standing between you and the next level of achievement. Perhaps one small flaw, a behavior you barely even recognize, is the only thing that's keeping you from where you want to be.

Who can help? Marshall Goldsmith is an expert at helping global leaders overcome their (sometimes unconscious) annoying habits and attaining a higher level of success. His one-on-one coaching comes with a six-figure price tag. But with this audiobook, you'll get Marshall's great advice without the hefty fee!

What is the solution? The Harvard Business Review asked Goldsmith, "What is the most common problem faced by the executives that you coach?" Inside, he answers this question by discussing not only the key beliefs of successful leaders, but also the behaviors that hold them back. He addresses the fundamental problems that often come with success and offers ways to attack them. Goldsmith outlines 20 habits commonly found in the corporate environment and provides a systematic approach to helping executives achieve a positive change in behavior.

Easy to read ideas and practical advice. Great story telling. Touches upon the important ideas in business and life. Highly recommended.

Talent, discipline, and great technicals are helpful, but not everything: behaviorals are the bedrock - without proper behaviorals, not matter how good youbare in other areas, you won't go far, or, as the title perfectly captures, you won't "get there". 5/5

The skills and attributes that underpin a successful executive career are subtly different than those that will support a successful board career. This book was written for executives but the lessons apply to the boardroom. Possibly they apply even more in that environment. "The higher you go, the more your problems are behavioural" concludes Marshall Goldsmith after some twenty years of coaching senior executives in Fortune 500 companies.

Goldsmith coaches people to make simple changes. These simple changes are difficult to make.

His message is delivered simple and straight. It is a difficult read because you recognise yourself in the examples of undesirable behaviours. Goldsmith cuts through the clutter with the simple advice that we all do all of these things from time to time; we only need to fix the behaviours that are holding us back.

As Goldsmith only deals with successful people he is working to fine-tune an already high performance. This is not a `self-help 1.01' book. It is for people who have become successful while exhibiting certain behaviours but who are now held back by those behaviours. It is hard to change behaviours that are associated with success. This book is not about a quick fix. It is about a long and consistent process that, if followed, will help to build new habits.

Board members struggle to gain entry to the coterie of successful directors. Choosing the right habits to build could accelerate acceptance. Choosing the wrong ones could leave you as you are; only more frustrated. The process relies on external feedback and validation to select the behaviours that need changing. This is daunting for board members given the confidential nature of boardrooms and the team-based nature of the role. Having a third party gather the feedback and qualify the participants to provide feedback makes this easier. If you don't have a professional coach to help you extract the value from this book you will need a trustworthy friend who understands boards and boardroom dynamics.

The book is a call to action. It is especially relevant for aspiring directors or those at the start of their career. It is also great for those sudden changes in board careers such as taking on a committee chairmanship or moving into a different sector. When you are new you need to be more adept at the behavioural skills to compensate for your lack of track record.

It would be exciting to apply this long process to the board performance review to build a lasting improvement in the quality of board interactions.

This is a worthwhile book; it is good but not easy.

This book takes you on a journey of self exploration and ends in one of the most inspiring ways I have seen. I finished the last couple of pages, reading out loud to my wife. Needless to say, we both have tears in our eyes and an appreciation for life that brings us both right to the present moment.

It is no doubt a book about habits we al have that impact us professionally and does a great job illustrating examples that we can all relate to. But most exciting is how you Start to reflect on how you treat your friends and family and the identity we have that bleeds across the professional / personal line.

Pick up this book, read it with intent and there is no way you don't walk away changed forever

I will be honest, I loved the book and all the content/ideas shared by the author in fact, I am going to use many of the strategies and tactics discussed in the book to improve my communication with my friends/family and employees at my work.

However, I find that following some of the ideas mentioned in this book in your personal life can be dull and make you sort of boring, obnoxious or horrible.

While I am all about improvement, I spend 2000-3000 bucks a month on books/services/events to improve myself but I don't want to suppress, repress or oppress myself of WHO I AM.

I understand the idea of how things should work in corporate world but if you gonna let people walk over you in real life and just take all that they throw at you like a soldier while it works in theory/philosophy it doesn't work that much in real life. You will lose value of REAL YOU.

BE TRUE TO YOURSELF. BE KIND and BE UNDERSTANDING but don't suppress who you are. That is what makes you CHARISMATIC.

Improve yourself and better youself for the good of family/friends and work or if you are going to be CEO/CFO/COO of a company but make sure you keep the real you awake.

We are in an environment where being yourself is seen as bad, but it shouldn't be that way.

This is one of the reason most men are becoming doormat for others, we accept whatever people throw at us, because we have read few self-improvement books.

Be nice but don't be a doormat my friends!

Marshall Goldsmith did a wonderful job of explaining how to remain in your position of success. If you're not there yet, you definitely learn what not to do.

This was a read that my boss strongly suggested the whole department read, however, everytime Marshall mentioned one of the 20 flaws, we all could identify a manager that had those same characteristics (and most times, it was the one that recommended we read the book!). He describes the flaws in such a way that you're not embarassed to own up to them and want to take steps to change. He also offers a perspective of the 360-degree feedback that made us realize that none of us were using it in the manner in which it was created.

Great read, great pace, it was as if you were in the room with him. Very funny and relatable. I highly recommend it to any manager that is wondering why they have high turnover in their department or why they haven't been able to forge true professional relationships with the people they work with.
