I read this chapter book to my 6 year old daughter and 4 year old son. We all loved it! My son loves knights, and my daughter, though into princesses, could relate to Igraine's chutzpah! Fun characters and some funny, magical antics. The bad characters are mean but not too scary. There are some "big words" in here, possibly due to the translation, but easy enough to explain and a good learning opportunity. We read this as part of a 1st graders' bookclub. It provided some good discussion and questions, like, Why is the sad knight so sad? What does "honor" mean? What does it mean to be a good knight? What does Igraine learn to appreciate about her brother? What does Igraine learn about herself?.... Bottom line: we all wish there was a sequel!

This book was read to my sons (ages 5 & 8) a chapter each night before bed and they loved it! The story is engaging but not scary, so it was perfect! My stepdad put them to bed one night & read a chapter to them & was hooked - he read the rest of the book to my youngest son a second time just so he could see what happens. :) That says a lot to me about the quality of this author's work. I highly recommend this book for both boys & girls.

This was a huge hit with my daughter at 6 - a great choice for ages 6 - 10, boy or girl, any reading level, because it's a fun, interesting read out-loud. Igraine is a very confident, pro-active little girl. She wants to be a knight. She'll be a real hero to any little girl who isn't stuck on the idea of being a "princess". In fact it's the story of a young person who doesn't want to be stuck in a box - and who'd like to be brave - great ideas to instill in any child. Check out C.F.'s Dragon Rider too.

Yay! A fantasy novel where the girl isn't a princess! In fact, she wants to be a knight. It was so nice to read a story to my girls where the hero is active and doesn't wait around for things to happen. I started out reading a chapter at bed-time, but my five-year-old loved the story so much that she asked for it during the day, too. On one day, I read for an hour. An hour!! So, yes, I recommend this book for both boys and girls. I know it's geared towards older children, but, as my child proved, younger will enjoy it as well.

I loved this! Igraine is supported by her family instead of knocked down in her desire to be a knight and through this support she's able to save the day. More stories about little girls should be about supporting them and telling them their interests are valid. In this case, knighthood.

On top of it, Cornelia Funke is one of my favourite authors so this is another one to add to the list of reasons why she's great.
