Not too impressed with this one. I suspected the twist early and 10 chapters later was so bored I considered skipping to the last 5 chapters, to at least hear how it ends. I can't help but wonder why this story was even told. It's just not that interesting a character study. And I'm starting to beleive Garth Nix has an affinity for whiny teenagers. With this book you get all the pouting of Sameth without the relief of Lirael or empathy for their plight. There's nothing to relate to, no one is particularly likable, and the one character that is probably supposed to be the most likeable reveals them selves to be kind of gross and pathetic. Rather than build interesting charasters the story gets caught up in the minute details of scene building. I keep telling my self "they're going to reveal what all the build up was for soon." But it hasn't happened yet, and I'm almost done with the book! Ultimately it feels empty and self-satisfyingly drawn out.

Garth Nix was born in 1963 in Melbourne, Australia. A full-time writer since 2001, he has worked as a literary agent, marketing consultant, book editor, book publicist, book sales representative, bookseller, and part-time soldier in the Australian Army reserve.
