Prompted by a biographer called Chronicler who realizes his true identity, Kvothe starts to tell his life story. In a novel wrapped up in storytelling, Nick Podehl does a superior job of flexing his voice to represent a diverse and eclectic range of characters. In particular, he skillfully changes the timbre and inflections of Kvothe’s voice as he grows from child to adult. Podehl also balances Kvothe’s range of emotions as he goes from family life to a life on the streets and then to a school of magic.
