Editorial Reviews

Review

Two whale experts communicate huge enthusiasm for their subject...light-hearted [and] fact-filled...Varied typefaces add further verve. Delicate ink crosshatching with watery washes both emphasize the whale's enormity and show it to be dwarfed by the vastness of the ocean.
—Publishers Weekly

[T]he blue whale gets an up-close look in this artfully composed study. Zoological facts are phrased to suit the book's inviting picture book format...This book will definitely satisfy youngsters' curiosity about 'the biggest creature that has ever lived on Earth!'
—Booklist

About the Author

Nicola Davies says, "Now there is so much man-made noise in the ocean that the blue whales are having trouble hearing one another. Unlike humpbacks, their booming hums are infrequent, so it is always exciting when we locate one."

Nick Maland says, "I have illustrated for newspapers and magazines over the years, but it was not until my daughter was born that
I turned to children's books!"

This book is a delight to read out loud to children, the illutrations are excellent and the information that is given is also educational. I would reccomend this book for lower primary use, it could even be used for middle primary use to start of a unit of work on Whales. It is also excellent for just reading to your children at home, or as independant reading material.

I purchased this book for my son who loves Whales, and all things ocean. The book does a great job of illustrating differences in size between various animals and describing basic whale physiology and behavior.

The illustrations are nice and should hold the attention of anyone 3+ years old. As others have mentioned, this book is excellent paired with "Is a Blue Whale the Biggest Thing There Is?" Wells of Knowledge book.

Absolutely love this book! I purchased it for my seven year old son to read aloud during our mammal theme week. It is absolutely beautiful and gives a lot of facts. He loved it and was enthralled with the illustrations.

This is a great series of books. I've gotten several for my 3 and 4 year old grandsons. They are really too young for these books, but they still pick up a lot of good information.

I really like it. It's not a "story" book, it's a book of facts for children presented in a way that is accessible with a parent present (i.e. there is a page that discusses the hunting of whales that we skip).

I ordered this book as soon as I saw it was published by Candlewick Press. This company does a superior job of matching authors and illustrators and printing absolutely beautiful books for children. The layout is spacious and print quite large making the books in this series ideal for children 5-8 years old. I ordered the entire series to use in my grade 2/3 classroom. It's difficult to find nonfiction audio books and stumbled upon this series in our local public library. I am thrilled with the quality and can't wait to share them with my class.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Big Blue Whale by Nicola Davies
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 21, 2012
Both my 11 year old and my 6 year old were fascinated by this book. The book describes the size, feeding habits, migration habits and a bit about the young of this majestic mammal in accessible entertaining style. As always with her books the parents become better informed eg I did not know that there are TWO global populations of blue whales who never meet because when one lot are at the equator, the other lot are at the opposite pole to where the first lot have come from....prompted lots of talk about seasons change, the earth tilting etc
The illustrations manage to convey the enormous SIZE of this gentle beast. This author is always entertaining and informative. I cannot praise this author and her work highly enough. This book inspired my kids and gripped them.
.
My kids were gripped by this book as by all her books. The language is easy enough for a six your old to read by themselves , perhaps with a bit of supervison or prompting. Really lovely book.

Nicola Davies’ passion and interest really shine through in this book. You can just tell it is written from the heart - beautiful and completely spell binding. My three year old loves this book and has learnt so much from it too. He talks about whales a lot and has absorbed everything in this book - learning without realising it because of the poetic language and beautiful illustrations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome

I loved this book. So well illustrated with very informative text - this book is great for sharing with one child or a class. My class were very sad for the two distinct families of whales which appear to be forever destined to pass for ships in the night. The size of the whale's eye in the head of such a large animal also invited great discussion and the size of the ear even more so. This is a lovely book.

Enjoyed reading this book with my 4 and 6 year old. My 6 year old in particular likes 'fact' books which I find incredibly boring to read. This however had the right amount of facts and good descriptive ways to describe how the whale skin would feel for example. Lots of non fiction books for children are just a collection of random facts that aren't really linked, this is factual but reads as a story, following a whales life over a year.
