Growing up in a bizarre cave-dwelling cult in Colorado, seven-foot, eight-inch Maurice "Slo-Mo" Finsternick knows nothing about the NBA--that is until the day he's discovered and becomes the hottest sports icon in the country.

This uproariously funny satire of pro sports is Rick Reilly at his very best. The bestselling author of the classic
Missing Links has delivered again with this dead-on tale of "Slo-Mo" Finsternick, a genius player with a patented thirty-foot hook shot. Eventually, though, Slo-Mo begins to move away from his kind, truthful, polite, and self-effacing ways and gradually learns to behave like a famous athlete. Can the big man's innocence survive the charms of the big show?

Editorial Reviews

Review

"An indescribable amalgam of Dave Barry, Jim Murray, and Lew Grizzard with the timing of Jay Leno and the wit of Johnny Carson. Reilly may well be the funniest sportswriter in America."
--
Publishers Weekly

"
Slo-Mo is a splendid comic device whose literal telling of his NBA career says more about pro sports than he could ever know."
--
Chicago Tribune

"
Slo-Mo! . . . is inspired satire, a laugh-a-minute, sometimes bawdy, over-the-top riff on everyone and everything associated with professional basketball. If you don't find something to laugh at with Slo-Mo!, run out, don't walk, and find a sense of humor."

I'm a recovering sportswriter -- two meetings a day -- who now writes books and movies and tries not to shoot his weight in golf.

I cranked out the back-page column for Sports Illustrated for more than 20 years and then did TV features and columns and swept up for ESPN for eight years.

I'm not a particularly smart man. Once, in Malaysia, I was about to pop the little hotel bedside chocolate into my mouth when my wife hollered, "That's the bug incense, you idiot!" Once, I was kayaking by myself when it began to rain. I paused, cursing my luck. Then the rain stopped. I started paddling again. Rain again. Pause. No rain. Started paddling again. Only then did I realize it was my paddle throwing drops on my head.

I'm crazy for people and their swings and misses and their small victories and sorrows and, most of all, their stories. I think that's what's always driven my writing. It was never about the sports -- I tried hard not to ever put numbers in my columns -- it was about the people who played them.

This latest book about Trump, though, rose out of the sheer gall he had to tell people he'd won 18 club championships, when I knew he faked most of those. How did I know? He told me! (Liars have a hard time keeping all their lies straight.) That set me on the trail of what other lies he was telling the world about his golf and his golf courses, which wound up being my latest: "Commander In Cheat: How Golf Explains Trump."

Anyway I hope you like it.

Rick Reilly has written three novels, with Slo-Mo being his most creative work. Penned as an "as told to, " it recounts the ups and downs of Maurice Finsternick, a former high school basketball phenom when he is unwittingly signed to an NBA contract. It's quite conversational, which makes it feel like Maurice is talking directly to the reader. Because it was published in 2001, the names are dated, yet it never detracts from the story. One begins to feel his pain and celebrate his success as though he is a real person. Since Reilly doesn't use a lot of jargon, even those not familiar with the inner workings of basketball can enjoy this book. I've read Slo-Mo at least ten times and never tire of it. A must read for any sports fan, lover of characters, or regular human being.

This is, especially in the beginning parts, a very funny book.
There are many "put it down and laugh out loud" statements.
It is clear that the author is very familiar with the NBA. I believe that sports fans will enjoy the book a lot. That said the plot of the story is just so weird. The main character, Slo-Mo, is extrememly naive, to the point of absurity. Also, the story turns kind of dark at the end. Overall, though, a fun read.

Too slow and narrow.

It's a great book, consisted of a great idea executed strongly. Take one imaginary innocent 8-foot tall cult-dweller with no exposure to pop culture or modern memes, put him into the modern NBA, and let the two bounce off each other. Hijinks ensue. SloMo's game improves and decreases based on his happiness. As the game slowly corrupts him, and everyone takes advantage of him, Slo-Mo learns about what is important in life.

There is a great book in here about professional basketball. Unfortunately, all the social parody gets in the way. The character is simply too stooopid for words. There are many funny and interesting bits. Mr. Barkley stands out as a character. Sadly, Reilly let this one get away. Worth a rental from your local library or from the used book section of this fine internet establishment.

If there were ever a "Forrest Gump" of the sports world, it's Slo Mo. I overheard Rick Reilly talk about this book on the Jim Rome show and purchased it a month later. A lot of the stories are based upon true NBA stories that Reilly had heard, and he didn't need a shoe horn and mounds of super glue to fit them into the short NBA career of Maurice Finkerstein, better known to the world as "Slo Mo."
Forget the fact that the real characters involved have never been affiliated with the team (Charles Barkley, Bryant Reeves and Phil Jackson aren't associated with Houston, Vancouver or Chicago/LA like they were in real life), it's a great read from start to finish. The first 2/3rd of the book based on funny stories... and the last 1/3rd you don't want to put the book down.

Great read. Nice throwback by Reilly.

As a rabid basketball fan, I really appreciated the in-jokes about the various sterotypical characters of the NBA, both the real names and the thinly veiled aliases like Mr.Dedman. Anyone whos ever found themselves out of their depth will identify with SloMo as he struggles to fit in with the big boys. Wickedly funny, but with a real message about friendship and being true to yourself....a great read
