About this ebook

The fourth novel in Peter Clines' bestselling Ex series.

When he’s awake, George Bailey is just an ordinary man. Five days a week he coaxes his old Hyundai to life, curses the Los Angeles traffic, and clocks in at his job as a handyman at the local college.

But when he sleeps, George dreams of something more.

George dreams of flying. He dreams of fighting monsters. He dreams of a man made of pure lightning, an armored robot, a giant in an army uniform, a beautiful woman who moves like a ninja.

Then one day as he’s walking from one fix-it job to the next, a pale girl in a wheelchair tells George of another world, one in which civilization fell to a plague that animates the dead…and in which George is no longer a glorified janitor, but one of humanity’s last heroes.

Her tale sounds like madness, of course. But as George’s dreams and his waking life begin bleeding together, he starts to wonder—which is the real world, and which is just fantasy?

I've been binge-reading the EX series over the past week and without a doubt novels 1-3 are exceptionally stellar. This 4th one.. well to be completely honest, I skipped the first 180 190 pages or so. I think Clines is a great author and what he does best is really evident in the previous books. I kind of feel like I wasted $9.99 on this fourth book tho. Still, I will give it 3 ☆'s bc the rest of the book makes up for it and his pros nd character development is as usual epic. Tis a Tough Call no doubt.

This is a side-story that wraps up all the loose ends by the end. It may as well be self-contained. Unfortunately, this novel meanders through a couple hundred more pages than it should have. To my further dismay, very little of import is told here. I'm sure a fan could skip out on it entirely. On the positive side: the book has been written such that a newcomer to the series can enjoy it.

I have mixed feelings about this 4th iteration of the Ex series. The beginning 150-200 pages are like plodding through a muddy swamp in full combat gear. Basically, it took longer to get to the point than it should have. However, once the plot began to unfold it was just as engaging as the previous installments. I just hope that the 5th novel is more like the first three and a lot less like the 4th.
