You don't hear of many accounts from the other side. This isn't a blood and guts account but a historical perspective from an officer that was in every major theater of the German war. He also gives some insights into the genius of Erwin Rommel. Some of my favorite parts of the book is how he made friends on either side before, during and after the war. Really great book.

This is a stellar book - a beautiful recounting of Colonel Hans von Luck's time throughout pre and post WWII. Easy to read, you almost feel like sitting in a room with him listening to him retell his story. This book does not included detailed events of battles, but his descriptions are more than enough for you to understand what transpired, how fierce the fighting was, and how terrible the losses. A must read!

For those of us today that still think of any German fighting during the war as a Nazi... This man was the perfevt example of what a soldier should strive to be. A true gentleman and a real human voice during the worst we had to offer as humanity.

About the author
Hans von Luck was born in 1911 in Flensburg, Germany, the son of a naval officer. Although he would have preferred to study law, he followed the path of duty and in 1929 entered the Reichswehr as a cadet officer. In 1939 his motorized unit was one of the first to cross the frontier into Poland, marking the start of World War II. Thereafter he was constantly in action in every major theatre of war. He was wounded twice and received two of his country's highest awards for gallantry, the German Cross in Gold and the Knight's Cross. He ended the war a full colonel, one of the youngest in the German army. He is married, for the second time, and has three sons.
