It was okay. High expectations were not met.
This was my first Murakami novel. His writing is interesting, but I could not stand how he portrayed women. It was like this unrealistic view of women as naive sexual objects crafted by a 16 yr old boy. I love surrealist works, but this just fell a bit flat in that arena too. I’m going to give one of his more surrealist heavy books, KOTS, a shot next. I have a feeling women will be depicted the same but hoping there is more payoff in the surrealism department. Didn’t leave me with much to think about afterwards. Although beautifully written at times, the themes were a bit trite. All in all, an over rated book imo.
