Boring and long-winded, i was fooled by the high ratings (4.6). I long for good science fiction, but unfortunately I have to sift through a lot of chaff to find the occasional jewel. I miss Asimov, Blish, and even Philip Jose Farmer. Can't wait for Scalzi's next book.

I read these in paperback form after my brother lent them to me, and they were the most captivating pieces of literature that I have ever touched, let alone read. They affected me emotionally in a way that no other media ever has, and that perhaps nothing ever will. I felt for the characters on individual levels as though we were living the same lives in the same world, and I cannot recommend them enough to anyone with an interest in reading anything for the rest of their lives. Dan Simmons created the perfect books, and together they are The Hyperion Cantos.

This is an amazing series. Well worth reading all 4 books. After reading this series, I'm putting Dan Simmons in the same shelf as Tolkien, Isaac Asimov and George R.R. Martin. Like Tolkien there are some bits that drag on and its sprinkled with not very good poetry... But if you can get past that, the world building is very good and the story keeps getting better in each book. Overall this is a very rewarding series and I would highly recommend it. This is one of those rare series (right up there with the Red Rising series by Pierce Brown) that builds on itself, peeling layer and adding suspense, and it made me stay up way too late to read just one more page.
About the author
Dan Simmons, a full-time public school teacher until 1987, is one of the few writers who consistently work across genres, producing novels described as science fiction, horror, fantasy, and mainstream fiction, while winning major awards in all these fields. His first novel, Song of Kali, won the World Fantasy Award; his first science fiction novel, Hyperion, won the Hugo Award. His other novels and short fiction have been honored with numerous awards, including nine Locus Awards, four Bram Stoker Awards, the French Prix Cosmos 2000, the British SF Association Award, and the Theodore Sturgeon Award. In 1995, Wabash College presented Simmons with an honorary doctorate in humane letters for his work in fiction and education. He lives in Colorado along the Front Range of the Rockies.
