From Lynda La Plante, one of the world’s greatest crime writers, Royal Heist is a big, dashing novel of deception, passion, and international suspense, in which a man with a dangerous double life masterminds the greatest robbery of all time.

With a beautiful family and a magnificent fortune, Edward de Jersey is making news with his prized racehorse Royal Flush. But while de Jersey socializes with the cream of English society, he keeps to himself the details of his background and how he acquired his wealth. The son of an East End bookie, de Jersey reinvented himself as an aristocrat after pulling off some of England’s most notorious heists. He has no intention of ever going back to crime . . . until his financial adviser loses his entire fortune in a disastrous investment and de Jersey decides to retrieve it the old-fashioned way: by stealing it.

From Monaco to the Hamptons, from London to the shadowy back alleys of cyberspace, de Jersey goes into action, using guile, force, and the latest technology to put together the perfect plan. Drawing on the expertise of a computer hacker with a passion for Elvis, the inside knowledge of a dying aristocrat, and the skill of a professional impersonator, de Jersey is ready to commit his greatest and final crime. He’s going to steal the crown jewels from under the nose of the royals themselves.

Now, as Royal Flush prepares for a spectacular run at the Derby, de Jersey faces his moment of truth: How much is he willing to risk to win the sport’s most coveted prize? And just how far will he go to get away with the perfect crime?

A novel that builds to an amazing crescendo of suspense,
Royal Heist is a glamorous and gritty tale of men and women bound together by love, greed, trust, and mistrust. With all the pounding excitement of a high-stakes horse race, this is fiction that takes hold, doesn’t let go, and dares us to keep guessing until the very end.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Praise for Royal Heist:

“Featuring great wealth, thoroughbred racehorses, a cosmopolitan setting, and beautiful women with incredibly big jewels . . .
Royal Heist is, however, several cuts above its glossy brethren, thanks to a remarkable protagonist named Edward de Jersey (think Pierce Brosnan). . . . La Plante’s opulent opus offers readers a chance to identify with a charismatic hero who romps with the super-rich.”
Booklist

“Four stars! Lynda LaPlante’s latest is a real diamond. . . . What makes the novel is the intricate plotting as de Jersey sets out to achieve the impossible. [She] keeps you on the edge till the very end.”
The Daily Express (London)

“The creator of
Prime Suspect pulls it off with her usual edgy pace and solid characterisation. A backdrop of horse-racing loaded with toffs adds glamour.”
The Daily Mirror (London)

I read all of the Anna Travis books and was not sure about a stand alone novel, but it was very interesting and engaging. I am glad I bought it.

Lynda LaPlante wrote another novel , called “Widows”, which became the basis
for a popular heist movie. “Royal Heist” is a stand-alone book in every way. Here,
she imagines a larger arena, stealing the crown jewels of England. This book is,
to me, recognizeable as a LaPlante creation because of its structure: Myriad
details of the crime are built up in layers going into the crime and the same
layers get taken down again as the crime is investigated and solved, but in a
different order. The reader can’t anticipate which layer will be discovered.
In the end, a big surprise occurs in the very last line of the very last page.

The author has always been a favourite, because her research has been very detailed and her stories kept me in total suspense. It was for these reasons that I purhased the book. However I felt this book was ideas taken from various bad movies and the ending was very weak and disappointing.

I have read all the Kindle books penned by Lynda la Plante. They have been murder mysteries and I have loved everyone. Her last one on the Kindle list for me was Royal Heist. It was a very disappointing book. She spent a lot of time building towards the heist with interesting details. They pull the heist off and then the novel goes badly south to a very disappointing conclusion!! If you're a stickler for justice above all else than this is the book for you. If you you want the bad guys to win every once and a while, then don't bother with this book.
