Here is a special abridged English translation of a major Indo-Persian epic: a panoramic tale of magic and passion, a classic hero’s odyssey that has captivated much of the world. It is the spellbinding story of Amir Hamza, the adventurer who in the service of the Persian emperor defeats many enemies, loves many women, and converts hundreds of infidels to the True Faith before finding his way back to his first love. In Musharraf Ali Farooqi’s remarkable abridged rendition, this masterwork is captured with all its colorful action and fantastic elements intact. Appreciated as the seminal Islamic epic or enjoyed as a sweeping tale as rich and inventive as Homer’s epic sagas, The Adventures of Amir Hamza is a true literary treasure.

Review

“The Iliad and Odyssey of medieval Persia, a rollicking, magic-filled heroic saga . . . in an interpretation so fluent that it is a pleasure to sit down and lose oneself in it.”—The New York Times Book Review

“A marvelous dovetailing of fantasy, history and religion . . . filled with lyrical resonance . . . [Readers] will love losing themselves in this complex yet ancient world of the imagination.”—
The Washington Post Book World

“It’s hard to think of an epic more dazzlingly splendid. . . . Farooqi has given world literature a gift.”—
Time

“It is a testament to the quality of Farooqi’s rendering of the text into English that he both conveys a sense of the art of the ‘sweetlipped historians’ and ‘nimble scribes of fancy,’ and produces a real page-turner.”—
The Times Literary Supplement

“[A] revelatory translation of a masterpiece of world literature . . . unequivocally an amazing piece of publishing history.”—
The Buffalo News

After a long time I returned to reading fiction. I read the Urdu version of this story and loved it. It was part of my childhood. I wished I could locate English version of our Urdu literature for our kids growing up in west with very little to no Urdu vocabulary. I found this book and loved the language and elaboration. A definite addition to your library.

After reading this I do plan to get hold of Hoshruba as well for my kindle and share it with my family youth.

Musharraf Ali Farooqi has done a great service to the literary community by this translation. Books like this and "Tilism-e-hosh ruba" rival, and in many ways are better than, the likes of Lord of the rings and Harry Potter in the richness of characters and the story line. A carefully translated work, such as this, can go a long way to introduce the immense Urdu literary tradition to the English speaking audience. Farooqi sahib hats off to you for your hard work and perseverance, hopefully you will continue your good work and translate some more gems.

A splendid translation. The phantastic stories of Hamza are a fundamental part of an old indian culture. Go to google images and surch "Hamzanama". If you love those mughal minatures, you will understand them much better if you read the extensive text of those old mughal stories.

Having read the Urdu version (Das'taa'n'ae' Amir Hamza) by Maqbool Jahangir during my pre-teen years, I found the English Version to be very interesting and sweet. The funny episodes are still there. The prose is rich but requires concentration to connect the dots. The friendship of Amir and his friends is a reminder of the value of friendship and how it impacts one's life. There are many other lessons in this fairy tale like journey, but all in all it's an entertaining read.

As I galloped through this voluminous book, I could feel the affection, the association and the special reverence the translator held for the characters in this magical saga. It must have required a lot of persistence and effort to translate this brilliant piece of work for the non-Urdu speaking readers. The adventures cover the entire world and the reader can easily sit down and lose herself in the "magic filled heroic saga".

It is very clever of the original writer to choose long names for his characters. The names leave the reader with a lasting image. For the true fans of the Das'taan(Adventures), it is real hard to forget the names. To assist the readership, at the end, a chapter is devoted to the list of characters, historic figures, deities, and mythical beings. The list describes the meaning of each name and its relevance.

The print is small to keep the number of pages down (perhaps), but each chapter is loaded with funny episodes, rich culture, poetical ballads and interactions that bring smile to one's face. Each chapter covers a story but the reader craves for the next episode. The adventures are a collection of Four Books. I am enjoying my journey through the first one. I have a long way to go but hopefully the colorful, playful and beautiful rendition will continue to make the remaining journey entertaining.

In short, it's pure entertainment.

Hopefully, some day someone will care to make a nice series out of this giving the readership a flavor of an Indo-Persian "Lord of the Rings".

This is a glorious tale, and if you want to go on a romp through a magical world, then this is the place to start.

Set in the early times of Islam. it does indeed also talk oh how Amir Hamza, the uncle of Muhammed, through his adventures, helped to spread Islam. If you ignore this aspect and focus on the utterly magical tale of adventure, magic, loyalty, devs, fairies, love, then you are set for a magical ride.

The translation of this edition is magnificent.

I finally finished reading the more than 900 pages and am slowly returning to contemporary life. The beheadings and halvings of infidels was getting a little too much, and the donations of robes of honor turned into a choking mass, but the whole is very very endearing.

The reviews are categorizing the adventure stories as work of Indo-Persian literature, which may be true. However, I guarantee that the only people who have read these 'Adventures of Amir Hamza' and related 'Tilisme Hoshruba' are the ones from Pakistan, who read it through the abridged version of stories in Urdu by late Maqbool Jahangir. Farooqi has translated from the original version and the result is something new and interesting for people like me who grew reading these stories in our early teens.

These stories are Indo-Pako-Turko-Persian equivalent of Homer's Iliads and other mythologies. However, there are certain differences. For example, it seems that stories are built at least on some real people. Amir Hamza, the young uncle of Holy Prophet Mohammad, was a brave and courageous man, who brought a comfort of security to the Prophet during early part of his prophethood. I am sure the stories of his bravery, prior to Mohammad's prophethood, were very popular around the Arabian peninsula. In time, they reached Persia, Turkistan (Central Asian Republics), India and even Malaysia and Indonesia through conquering armies, sufis, merchants, travellers, etc. and got expanded by the story-tellers.

Reviews are mentioning that Amir was converting pagans to the True Faith. Readers may incorrectly assume that the True Faith refers to Islam. This is not true. Islam came much later. The True Faith refers to the faith of Abraham - the father of Jews, Christians, and Muslims.

Our children books in Urdu did not capture the romantic side of Amir Hamza. This came out as a pleasant surprise. Amir's love for Princess Meher Nigar is the most prominent piece coming to light through Farooqi's translation. When I was a teenager, it was battles and one on one combats that used to thrill me. But now it seems it is stories of love and romance :-)

This is excellent work. Adventures after adventures and you won't stop till you read the entire book, yes entire 970 pages of it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Avoid this one....

Sadly there was no rating lower than this. Save your money. This unabridged version spoiled my childhood memories. All the heroes are major A** ***** in this and absolutely no respect for women, completely degrade them. *spoiler alert* Raping a 12 year old is no big deal and should be forgiven. A woman paraded naked in front of the king's men, spends years building her own empire only to please the same man who graciously takes her back in his harem and then marries someone else. My childhood memories can never be returned after reading 1/4th of this book. Could not stand it any more than that.
