Full of lighthearted humor, sumptuous food, the wisdom of an Italian mother-in-law, and all the atmosphere of Elena Ferrante’s Neapolitan Novels, this warm and witty memoir follows American-born Katherine Wilson on her adventures abroad. Thanks to a surprising romance—and a spirited woman who teaches her to laugh, to seize joy, and to love—a three-month rite of passage in Naples turns into a permanent embrace of this boisterous city on the Mediterranean.

In this warmly funny and spirited memoir, American-born Katherine Wilson arrives in Naples, Italy, for an internship at the U.S. Consulate. One evening, she meets handsome Salvatore and finds herself immediately enveloped by his elegant mother, Raffaella, and the rest of the Avallone family. From that moment, Katherine’s education begins: Never eat the crust of a pizza first, always stand up and fight for yourself and your loved ones, and consider mealtimes sacred—food must be prepared fresh and consumed
in compagnia. Unexpectedly falling for Salvatore, and captivated by Raffaella’s companionship and guidance, Katherine discovers how to prepare meals that sing—from hearty, thick ragù to comforting pasta al forno. Through courtship, culture clashes, marriage, and motherhood, Katherine comes to appreciate carnale, the quintessentially Neapolitan sense of comfort and confidence in one’s own skin. The Mother-in-Law Cure is a sumptuous story that is a feast for the senses. Goethe said, “See Naples and die.” But Katherine Wilson saw Naples and started to live.

“Katherine Wilson has written a glorious memoir celebrating the holy trinity of Italian life: love, food, and family. Her keen eye and sense of humor take you through the winding streets of Naples at a clip, on a ride you hope will never end. If you love Italy, or the idea of it, you will love this book. And, if you ever plan to visit Naples, tuck this in your suitcase: It’s the best primer I’ve ever read as a guide to this bustling, vibrant southern Italian port city.”
—Adriana Trigiani, author of The Shoemaker’s Wife

“In her debut memoir,
Only in Naples, Katherine Wilson manages to combine everything I love—food, family, and Italy—with heaping portions of heart and humor. How lucky we are to get these hilarious and wise perceptions filtered through a sincerely loving eye. You’ll want to share this book with friends and family over a big bowl of rigatoni alla Genovese.”—Julie Klam, author of Friendkeeping

“This thoroughly enjoyable love letter to Naples is a tribute to the author’s irrepressible mother-in-law, a larger-than-life figure who teaches Wilson (and us) not just how to cook a true Neapolitan lasagna complete with tiny meatballs, but how to approach life itself with gusto and a healthy appetite. Read this and you’ll find yourself pining for your very own sequined Italian mother-in-law.”
—Luisa Weiss, author of My Berlin Kitchen and founder of The Wednesday Chef

Only in Naples is a cozy, funny, heartfelt love letter to Katherine Wilson’s adopted city and beloved family-by-marriage, especially her mother-in-law, the gorgeous, indomitable Raffaella, whose cooking fills these pages with luscious ricotta and chewy octopus alike. Wilson’s easygoing writing perfectly suits this tale of an innocent abroad, an American girl who discovers herself in the midst of a foreign culture that becomes, in the end, her own.”—Kate Christensen, author of How to Cook a Moose

“A delightful, insightful tale of being romanced by a vibrant city, a strong-willed mother and a sweet man—all at once . . . Wilson’s eye for detail and character bring the culture, the rhythm, and the food of Naples to life.
Only in Naples is a must-read for anyone who loves Italian food—and isn’t that everyone?”—Kathleen Flinn, author of The Sharper Your Knife, the Less You Cry

A 'MUST READ" before Italy travel plans are laid either by reading chair or plane!
Most people I believe have been introduced to the Italian people & culture by history books on the Roman Empire or in cool & darkened movie theatres wishing just for a moment to be Gregory Peck darting in & out of traffic on a classic Vespa scooter with of course Audrey Hepburn's arms wrapped around my...er..one's waist. Go ahead...guess who flunked history!Which is why American writer Katherine Wilson's 'ONLY IN NAPLES: LESSONS IN FOOD and FAMILGLIA from my ITALIAN MOTHER-IN-LAW' is the perfect antidote for realizing my Vespa days & thus my chance to romance Audrey might never be realized. It's as tasty as a big ol' sizzling meatball swimming in red sauce from your favorite Italian restauraunt. Better yet, Ms. Wilson transports the reader to the earthy & passionate 'napoletani' culture of the Campania region, a rich plate of 'frutti di mare' (San Marzo tomatoes) & 'mozzarella di bufala',basil & lemons serving as the base of the Neapolitan cuisine. Where 'Only in Naples' excels is taking a classic 'fish out of water' travel story in first person & adding a dash of romance with a heaping portion of deep 'famiglia' love between Ms. Wilson's new Italian boyfriend Salvatore & MILD SPOILER ALERT..her eventual loving & kind 'marito' (husband)...and the wonderful Avallone extended family she became accepted & cherished by.Sure we have the almost classic 'Zio Toto' (Uncle Toto),a one handed 'casinaro' (the loud one in the clan)..who fearlessly brings home the prized octopus fresh from the Gulf of Naples, to the magical kitchen of the real star of this Neapolitan tale..the beautiful Raffaella, Salvatore's precious 'mia bella madre'. Although lost in translation at first, the obvious love that her son & this strange American girl radiate together within the extended family & the implications of what that entails is really the heart of this story. What elevates this tale of two people from distinctly opposite cultures, is the sharp observations & amazing Napoli food that Ms. Wilson introduces the reader to. Upon finishing this book it took all my will power NOT to quit my job and drag my wife to the airport & count the hours to our first wood fired Pizza Margherita! Can you resist? If so your'e a better man (or woman) than I was. Look.. just read this book & see for yourself. 'Only in Naples' truly means..ONLY IN NAPLES! You will fall in love with the Neopolitan culture of food & family = love! There is so much more so no more hints.. I have my own problems...I have to search high & low in a major American City & try to find a big piece of 'pizza di scarola' (focaccia stuffed with escarole, olives & pine nuts)...but no luck. Nunzia ate i!!To find out who is Nunzia & why did he eat my scarola...get the book! "Stammi bene Ciao Ciao!!"

I really enjoyed this book. Usually, I am unabashedly only a reader of fiction (over 150 books a year), but someone recommended this non-fiction book to me and I'm glad they did. It is autobiographical, but that is too dreary of a word for a novel which is a very interesting read throughout: calling it a coming-of-age story is accurate but might sell it short: it covers family dynamics, great food, falling in love, and a cultural education. I've learned that much of Italian (Neapolitan, specifically) culture revolves around food, and I wanted to taste all of the dishes mentioned, although I think I would balk at preparing the octopus. What stayed with me the most, though, was really the cultural aspects of Italy, and Naples in particular. I never did the college "junior year abroad" (JYA) experience (although I lived in Europe for a few years as a child), but this felt very much like squeezing the cultural insight of a JYA into the three days it took me to read it, without having to learn the language to get those insights. I read this book right after it came out and I am still thinking about the cultural side weeks later. Definitely worth the read.

A sweet tribute and entertaining read, recounting the author's acceptance into a Neapolitan family, with all the quirks, flavors, and culture-shock lessons that go with it. It's a love story, not just of a couple and family, but of a city that she comes to adore with all its energy and warts. The loving acceptance of the famiglia is so typical of southern Italy, where "hospitality is sacred". Some of the story reminds me of my own Italian side of the family, stories told of how my grandmother brought my mother into the fold, taught her to cook the family recipe's, loved fiercely and unconditionally, and lit up a room with her smile and energy. Katherine Wilson's memoir is poignant and funny and very well written. It made me want to see the family photos, taste the melanzana, and buzz around Naples with her and her mother-in-law.

I LOVE this book! Katherine Wilson's is as rich and full of surprises as the food she writes about. There is a feel of "carnale" - or of the flesh - throughout the book, which, works as an antidote to our too often too mind-centric world. This book is full of the flavors of self-realization, wisdom, and laugh out loud (yes I did) humor. It is also deeply moving - I adored the very real "tasting of tears" (your'll have to read it to learn more) as well as the wise humor of "letting an octopus be left to cook in it's own juice". ( I will remember that one as I next try to push the river.) And better yet: "sfamarsi" to dehunger oneself. The book keeps on giving and giving. Treat yourself to this read. You'll come away feeling truly nourished.

I really enjoyed this book, but felt the author was a little vulgar at times. Wasn’t needed. The story of her experiences were interesting.

Only in Naples is a sparkling memoir that dances through the author’s years in Italy, getting to know Naples, its culture and most importantly the family that became her own. I laughed and cried, wanted to race to the next scene and savor every page at the same time. Katherine arrives in Italy for what was supposed to be a brief internship that turns into a 19 year journey into Italy, food, Naples and the Avallone family. It’s great fun to read about adventures, misunderstandings and an evolving appreciation for a whole way of life and view of the world. Anyone who loves food or Italy or both will enjoy this light-hearted look into Italian life (which, we learn, can’t be separated from food) that reads like a beautiful love letter to her Neapolitan mother-in-law.

I have to say at the outset that the author is someone I know -- she was my daughter's classmate in high school, but I didn't know her well, except through her amazing talent as a singer. It seems that her talents also include the ability to write a funny, sweet, reflective memoir about her introduction to and integration into life in Naples. I loved learning about how the author's mother-in-law balanced the life of her family by providing nourishment and nurturing at the table. There are wonderful recipes, but even more there are moments of such profound love. I can't think of anyone who would not enjoy this book.

I loved this book! It is warm, funny, and light hearted. Yet, on a deeper level speaks to the love, and commitment ingrained so deeply in the psych of the Neapolitans. Ms. Wilson allows the reader into her life in the most intimate of ways. What a thrill to be a part of a young girl’s journey in the chaotic paradise of life and love in Napoli. From her first days as a novice apprentice at the US embassy, to hiding jars of peanut butter as an American-Italian wife and mother, I laughed, cried, got angry and fell in love. The true soul of the book I think comes from the demonstration of incredible love forged between Katherine and her remarkable mother in law. This is something rare and wonderful.

I really enjoyed this book. I read it for the first time when my Italian friend recommended it and loved it. It helped me to understand my Italian family I grew up with in NJ who were from southern Italy and love and appreciate them even more. I now am living in Naples for a summer and am re-reading this book and loving it! It’s a breath of fresh air to being an American and loving in Naples.

I was 21 when I left UK for Italy in 1991 on an unplanned adventure. I ended up in Naples briefly working for a wonderful family who are still friends today. I had lots of fun but also got into many scrapes including being homeless and robbed countless times but I always loved Naples. I went on to teach English there for 10 years and married a man from the Spanish Quarters. His family were not quite as nice as the Avellone family and I think I would still be there if they had been! So many cultural differences. The food is amazing the scenery breathtaking and the people are genuine. If they like you, you've got friends for life. I loved this book, a true reflection of the more wealthy families in Napoli. Also in stark contrast to my own experience but lots of common ground. Please write an update!
