About the Author

Rich Lo has been drawing and painting since he was a child. When he was seven years old, Rich and his family immigrated to the United States from Canton, China, and settled in Chicago's Chinatown. An accomplished illustrator and fine artist, Rich is the author-illustrator of Chinese New Year Colors and the illustrator of Mountain Chef, which won the Carter G. Woodson Award from the National Council of Social Studies, and Father's Chinese Opera, which was an Asian/Pacific American Award for Literature Honor Book.

Lo brings his characteristic watercolor washes to this bilingual English-Chinese picture book about animal-shaped kites. Each spread centers a single animal in turn: a fish, a crab, a dragonfly, a bird, a butterfly, a tiger, and others, in no apparent order. Abstract colors and swirls pattern each background as each kite, seemingly paper cut, stands out in vibrant multilayered shades. A spare sentence describes the action, with the translation offered beneath in simplified Chinese and the animal word highlighted in each: “A tiger pounces across the sky.” Though no pronunciations are offered, this is a visually rich guide to animals and an introduction to a contemporary festival. There is a palpable depth and dimension to both the kites and the sky, rendered in digital watercolors. The selection of animals feels random given the lack of an overt narrative thread, but the dreamy parade of artistic forms will pique children’s curiosity and spark their imaginations. Readers may be tempted to breeze through the free-flowing, patterned text, but the figurative language invites us to pause and ponder the layers of meaning.
