In Tibetan, the word for Buddhist means “insider”—someone who looks not to the world but to themselves for peace and happiness. The basic premise of Buddhism is that all suffering, however real it may seem, is the product of our own minds.Rebecca Novick’s concise history of Buddhism and her explanations of the Four Noble Truths, Wheel of Life, Karma, the path of the Bodhisattva, and the four schools help us understand Tibetan Buddhism as a religion or philosophy, and more important, as a way of experiencing the world.

I'm a natural nomad, having lived in England, California, India, and now France. I'm trying to learn what it means to 'settle down'. I now have a cat so that helps, but for me travel is part of a spiritual path. I have a passion for learning about new cultures and different ways of thinking and viewing the world. After a few decades studying Tibetan Buddhism, I am now forging a more personal spiritual path embracing influences from both Eastern and Western philosophical systems, the Greeks in particular. I am a big fan of Carl Jung, particularly his work on the shadow and the anima/animus principles, which I hope to write about in the future. I am currently amusing my friends by learning French and am constantly developing short story ideas and struggling with finding the discipline and craft with which to set them down.

We went to Tibet in 2010 and I had tried to do some reading to understand its culture which is tied closely to its religion. Yet, I was confused about what I was seeing in the holy places in Lhasa. Once home, I tried to rectify this by searching out resources about Tibetan Buddhism. I settled on this one as it seemed to be pretty basic.

The book is good and organized well. But Buddhism is a complex religion and it may be beyond any book to summarize something so complicated.

I would still recommend this book to someone wanting to get a grasp of the faith of the Tibetan people. But expect to read it slowly and maybe take some notes.

This book provides a comprehensive overview of the theory and practice of Tibetan Buddhism. Some of the topics are incredibly difficult to explain, although she makes a valiant attempt. I also believe that the book mostly represents only the largest lineage of Tibetan Buddhism (represented by H.H. the 14th Dalai Lama as the spiritual leader), but there are also other ways of practicing, i.e. according to other lineages. Even so I think the book is basicly solid.
