The #1 New York Times bestselling novel and basis for the Academy Award–winning film.

Aibileen is a black maid in 1962 Jackson, Mississippi, who's always taken orders quietly, but lately she's unable to hold her bitterness back. Her friend Minny has never held her tongue but now must somehow keep secrets about her employer that leave her speechless. White socialite Skeeter just graduated college. She's full of ambition, but without a husband, she's considered a failure. Together these seemingly different women join together to write a tell-all book about work as a black maid in the South, that could forever alter their destinies and the life of a small town.

I have waited for a long time to read this book. I was not disappointed at all. Jim Crow Mississippi from the point of view of the help. Civil rights marches are happening all around the country and yet the status quo stays on in Jackson Mississippi until a college graduate, with her own maid, sees how her friends are treating their help and she decides to do something about it. Grab your favorite spot, a favorite drink, get comfy and sink into this one if you haven't already. I'm probably going to listen to it a few more times.

The story didn’t twist anything to the point where it seemed uncanny, so that’s good. I love the characters as well! Overall, an amazing read that sticks to its nature. :)

A great book, that makes you really feel the what times were like back then. Great read/listen to, I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves history or has a heart. I didn't want it to stop, if you liked the movie then you'll love the book. But be warned you might want a big box of tissues next to you at all times when you read/listen to this book!

The best book I've read in a long time... A story that makes you laugh, cry, sometimes get just plain frustrated and at the end, beam with joy over their triumph.

Brilliant! This is one of the best audio books I have "read." The narration is wonderfully done and engaging. Of course, the message of this work is important and I think is a "must read" for everyone to understand the history of civil rights.
