About this ebook

The master of wit and irony

Published here alongside their evocative original illustrations, these fairy tales, as Oscar Wilde himself explained, were written “partly for children, and partly for those who have kept the childlike faculties of wonder and joy.”

REFRAIN from purchasing this edition !!! Oscar Wilde's fairy tales are wonderful, so my unflattering review rather concerns this edition in particular, which is not only painfully ugly - printed on rough toilet paper of the lowest quality -, but unethical as well !... Two renowned scholars, Mr. Gyles Brandreth and Mr. Jack Zipes, drafting the Introduction and the Afterword, respectively, quote one another - or are they ? - most joyfully, not concerning themselves in the least with copyright infringement, plagiarism and other such trivialities... So I quote Mr. Brandreth's Introduction: " And the Prince and the swallow, what are they but male lovers whose pure love transcends the vulgar values of the petty-minded town councilors? " (p. XV) To which Mr. Zipes' Afterword "echoes" : " [...] the prince and the swallow are clearly male lovers, whose spiritual bond transcends the [...] petty values of the town councilors " (p. 210) No quotation marks, nothing!... Who's quoting who?... Allez savoir! And it goes on - Mr. Brandreth : " In each of these stories, [...] there is [...] a religious fervor and a sense of impending doom " (p. XV) / Mr. Zipes : " Throughout the stories [...] there is a sense of impending doom. [...] Oscar Wilde's fairy tales have a religious fervor to them " (p. 211 & 213) No wonder young students copy whole essays from the Internet and from one another, disregarding any kind of work etiquette, if even such eminent university professors think nothing of it!... This is a DISREPUTABLE edition and an indelible stain on Signet Classics, whose message to the youth is here particularly blameworthy... BAD, BAD work, DO NOT BUY this for your kids, there are fairer editions of Oscar Wilde's short stories, nicely illustrated and presented with at least some sense of professionalism!

About the author

Oscar Wilde (1854–1900) was an Irish writer, poet, and playwright. His novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray, brought him lasting recognition, and he became one of the most successful playwrights of the late Victorian era with a series of witty social satires, including his masterpiece, The Importance of Being Earnest.

Jack Zipes is a preeminent fairy-tale scholar who has written, translated, and edited dozens of books, including The Original Folk and Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm and Complete Fairy Tales of Oscar Wilde. He is a professor emeritus of German and comparative literature at the University of Minnesota.

Gyles Brandreth is a writer, speaker, broadcaster, and former Member of Parliament. His years as a government whip were chronicled in Breaking the Code: Westminster Diaries, which the Times described as “by far the best political diary of recent years." His other works include the bestsellers Philip and Elizabeth: Portrait of a Royal Marriage, Charles & Camilla: Portrait of a Love Affair, and The 7 Secrets of Happiness. Brandreth has also appeared as a reporter on BBC One's The One Show and is a regular on BBC Radio 4's Just a Minute.
