About this ebook

As seen in the New York Times and on Good Morning America-now updated by the author.

Imagine a diet that's as easy as "a spoonful of sugar" (or extra-light olive oil) twice a day. A diet that actually reduces appetite and cravings. A diet that's based on a wealth of scientific findings but is simple enough for anyone to stick to. A diet with results that amaze almost everyone who tries it.

Psychology professor Seth Roberts asks a simple question most weight-loss experts haven't thought to tackle: What makes people hungry? Based on a new understanding of how the human body regulates hunger, The Shangri-La Diet presents a strikingly simple and surprisingly effective way to lose weight-without giving up favorite foods.

Simple and counterintuitive, this extraordinary new diet is changing the way the world thinks about weight loss-one success story at a time.

So effective, simple & cheap! I used to always be in great shape. In fact I studied Dietetics in College with the hopes of teaching thousands one day exactly how to eat healthy. Fifteen years after college and well into my career in finance I had somehow morphed into someone else's overweight body. I stopped working out years ago and led an absolutely sedentary life behind a computer and phone. I had never done a "diet" before and I really wasn't motivated to start working out again even though I knew I needed to lose weight. I was reading a book a friend had gotten me (Freakonomics) when I came across this odd diet the authors friend came up with. Intrigued, I bought a copy on Amazon for like $5. I figured what the hell... I might get a chuckle out of it if nothing else. The book is a pretty easy and fun read. The diet made enough sense and didn't require me to purchase some expensive magic pill or food... or really do much at all. In fact, I decided that to really test this out I wouldn't even work out so I could evaluate just the diet itself. After the first week when I lost 7 lbs I was certain something was wrong. Ahhh, I figured it was just water weight or something... and therefore the weight-loss was certain to cease. I figured sense I didn't have anything to lose other than weight (it costs NOTHING) I may as well continue till I'm certain this was a hoax. By Wednesday the next week I had only lost 2 lbs and I was certain the losses were going to slow down. By the end of the week I somehow lost another 7 lbs?! Week after week the weight-loss followed by unbelief continued. After losing 50 lbs in about two months I finally relented that this diet actually worked! I had to go out and buy all new pants after losing 8 inches around my waist! In fact, I had to actually stop the diet as I was simply getting too skinny (5'9", 158 lbs). Note, I've told people how to do the diet within 3 minutes... but the only ones who had success were the people who actually read the whole book.
