Thompson's 11th gaslight mystery to feature midwife Sarah Brandt (after 2008's Murder on Bank Street) fails to bring to life late 19th-century New York City as well as, say, Caleb Carr does in his period fiction, but series fans should be satisfied. Sarah's mother, Elizabeth Decker, who's feeling guilt-ridden over the death of her pregnant oldest daughter, decides to seek supernatural help from a local medium, Madame Serafina. At a s ance, someone uses the cloak of darkness to stab to death Mrs. Gittings, a woman also hoping to contact a deceased family member. Since the s ance participants were all holding each others' hands throughout the ritual, suspicion focuses on the medium's accomplice. Sarah helps her policeman friend, Det. Sgt. Frank Malloy, investigate. Solid prose in part compensates for a mundane solution to the crime.

Well, I am not quite as excited as the previous reviewer and I have mixed emotions about this book. The idea of spirits at a seance is a little over the top for me, but it was in parts one of her more fascinating topics. A lot of repetition in the middle as Malloy has to question everyone that was in attendance and he has to ask them all the same questions. The ending is fairly exciting which kind of makes up for the boredom. All in all it’s a pretty good read.

For those of you who love murder mysteries you can't go wrong by reading this thrilling book. This book was probably written by astronauts because it is out of this world. It is filled with twists and turns, suspense, new suspects everywhere and everything else you would find in a murder mystery. After devouring this epic page-turner by Victoria Thompson be sure to read the other in the series... Murder in Chinatown (Which is also written with pure talent) and many more... READERS BEWARE once starting this novel all you will want to do is read, read and read or listen if it's an audio book. This book will keep you hanging on till the end. No book, in the history of murder mysteries will ever keep you attached like this. Honest, I felt really depressed every time I had to stop reading. Anyway, refer this book to your friends. Watch out, Victoria Thompson is on her way to the top...
