Quentin Coldwater is brilliant but miserable. A high school math genius, he’s secretly fascinated with a series of children’s fantasy novels set in a magical land called Fillory, and real life is disappointing by comparison. When Quentin is unexpectedly admitted to an elite, secret college of magic, it looks like his wildest dreams have come true. But his newfound powers lead him down a rabbit hole of hedonism and disillusionment, and ultimately to the dark secret behind the story of Fillory. The land of his childhood fantasies turns out to be much darker and more dangerous than he ever could have imagined. . . .

The prequel to the New York Times bestselling book The Magician King and the #1 bestseller The Magician's Land, The Magicians is one of the most daring and inventive works of literary fantasy in years. No one who has escaped into the worlds of Narnia and Harry Potter should miss this breathtaking return to the landscape of the imagination.

People who hated it don’t get it

I think people who didn’t like this book don’t understand depression or isolation, repeating that they didn’t like Quentin being all ‘Poor me’ all the time. Happy people can’t relate. To me, Quentin is highly relatable. I love this book with its quirky sense of humor, nerdy references and weird twists and turns. Harry Potter and narnia are comparisons some have made and does sort of satire both to a certain degree, but this book is in an entirely different category of fantasy writing from those. Too dark for Harry Potter and too sacrilegious to be narina. It is its own thing. I recommend it to people to whom the world can be a cruel joke sometimes. If you’re a Prozac-happy perfect person, it’s not for you.

It’s not Harry Potter

This dark twisted and somewhat relatable trilogy is an absolute dream. It’s not Harry Potter and of you go in thinking that you will hate it. This isn’t a cookie cutter sweet triumphant story, it’s dark and twisted and will leave you feeling uneasy on purpose! Absolutely loved this trio loft and first book!
