About this ebook

The first novel in Hugo Award-winning author Charles Stross's witty Laundry Files series.

Bob Howard is a low-level techie working for a super-secret government agency. While his colleagues are out saving the world, Bob's under a desk restoring lost data. His world was dull and safe - but then he went and got Noticed.

Now, Bob is up to his neck in spycraft, parallel universes, dimension-hopping terrorists, monstrous elder gods and the end of the world. Only one thing is certain: it will take more than a full system reboot to sort this mess out . . .

This book isn't for everybody but I've yet to find one that is. I enjoyed the mix of Lovecraftian horror and geeky technobabble with a good sense of humor. I think my biggest issue was reading it 20ish too late (technology comments didn't age all that well) and me not being British (nobody's perfect). Those are really minor issues and more my fault than the author's. I look forward to the next book.

In a world where supernatural horrors are both summoned and kept at bay by hackers, the fate of mankind rests almost entirely in keeping these occult codes and equations outside of the public eye. A fun, light, yet interesting read.

Normally I wouldn't enjoy 'magic' in my science fiction but Stross manages to make it work. All the mystical aspects of the stories (there are two in this book) are still grounded in science and given rational explanation. And the science fiction aspects are of course excellent.
