The Cat Who Came to Breakfast (Cat Who... Book 16) Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 880 ratings

Jim Qwilleran and his cats scramble for clues when peaceful Breakfast Island is turned upside-down by murder in this mystery in the New York Times bestselling Cat Who series.

Qwilleran and the cats are visiting an island known by many names. Qwill has always called it Breakfast Island, but to the taciturn natives, it’s Providence Island. To the rich summer resident, it’s Grand Island—and to the developers and tourists who are turning this once-peaceful place into a circus, it’s Pear Island. But when some odd “accidents” occur, including a fatal boat explosion, Qwill suspects sabotage and sets out to investigate—because murder by any other name is just as deadly...

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In the 16th Cat Who . . . adventure, Pickax City's Jim Qwilleran and his intuitive Siamese cats, Yum Yum and Koko, investigate odd accidents plaguing a glitzy resort recently built on a nearby island in Moose County, "400 miles north of everywhere." As Breakfast Island undergoes development which highlights its possible pirate past, retired reporter Qwill and others bemoan the spoiling of its natural beauty. After an episode of food poisoning and an accidental drowning at the resort hotel, the owners of the Domino Inn, an already established bed-and-breakfast, ask Qwill to find out whether disgruntled locals are trying to discourage tourism. On the day that Qwill moves himself and the cats into one of the Inn's cottages, another guest is injured on the Inn's front steps and an explosion in the resort's marina kills a yacht owner. Questioning reticent natives and resort employees, Qwill enlists an informant to speak with witnesses of the accidents. He himself talks with the vague proprietor of a resort antique shop filled with overpriced items. But it is Yum Yum's domino playing that sets the former newsman on the right track. Braun ( The Cat Who Went into the Closet ) gives fans what they crave in this latest meandering tale about the skeptical, lovable Qwill on an island full of cats. Lilian Jackson Braun (June 20, 1913 – June 4, 2011) was an American writer, well known for her light-hearted series of "The Cat Who..." mystery novels. The "Cat Who" books center on the life of former newspaper reporter, James Qwilleran, and his two Siamese cats, Koko and Yum Yum, in the fictitious small town of Pickax located in Moose County "400 miles north of everywhere." Although never formally stated in her books, the towns, counties and lifestyles described in the series are generally accepted to be modeled after Bad Axe, Michigan, where Braun resided with her husband until the mid-1980s.

The Cat Who series are wonderful. This one was a replacement for the one my Mama had and wore out. She is blind and 98 years old, so audio books are very important to her. Being picky about language, sexual content, etc, she finds these to be both entertaining and "safe". I have heard them myself (she has the whole series) and agree they are never boring. She listens to them over and over and occasionally I have to replace one for her. Lilian Jackson Braun was a brilliant mystery writer, with a little whimsical fun thrown in.

I had all of the "Cat who..." books in hard copy but donated them, along with a huge library of books, because I have arthritis and find it hard to hold large books. I now have a Kindle and I re bought most of my library back in Kindle format. This includes all of the "Cat who..." series.

I adore Qwilleran and the cats. It's light reading, which I want now and then. Gentle reading with lots of humor. Great for children too. It's just a shame Lilian Jackson Braun passed away and took Qwill along with her.

Wonderful sixteenth Cat Who book. In this book Qwilleran and his cats visit a recently commercialized island known as Breakfast Island where several disturbing incidents have make people suspect sabotage and Qwilleran, with his reputation for snooping around and exposing crimes is asked to check in and poke around by his friends who have recently bought an inn there. He meets an unusual young woman who wants to get away from her controlling mother and discovers that she knows what is going on.

This is book #16 in Lillian Jackson Braun's series, "The Cat Who...". When an island is developed for tourism, Jim Qwilleran goes to stay with his friends, the Bamba's at their inn. Of course, accidents start occurring and then a boat explodes and Qwill is on the case once again, with the help of his cat detective, Koko. There is no shortage of suspects because the native islanders are not happy with the over-development of their island. Koko's pretty handy with the dominoes that are popular on the island, and uses them to relay clues to Qwill. Very good light mystery reading.

I love all "The Cat Who" books . I have the whole entire series and I have reread them more than once just because they are fun, enjoyable stories. Sometimes you just want a fun engaging story with out having to think every little thing through to figure out if that is what the author meant or was it something else that they meant. Long live Koko, Yum Yum, and Qwilleran!

Marvelous story. I love how Lilian Jackson Braun keeps her stories so well written, you feel like part of the same family. It is interesting how she has introduced a new female in this story who moved to Picax and will no-doubt give Polly a challenge.

As always Lilian and Koko, of course, entertained from beginning to end. I'm not giving away any of the story, but safe to say this was a pleasure to read and a must for Qwill & Koko fans.
