It's 1809, and Napoleon's army is sweeping across Spain. Lieutenant Richard Sharpe is newly in command of the demoralized, distrustful men of the 95th Rifles. He must lead them to safety--and the only way of escape is a treacherous trek through the enemy-infested mountains of Spain.

Rousing action story of British Infantry Riflemen fighting the French in the beginning of the Peninsular Campaign of the Napoleonic War. Richard Sharpe is a combat veteran but new to being an officer. He has a shaky start, but learns to be a good officer in addition to being a good combat soldier. The equipment of 1809 may be primitive, but combat is combat!
