Readers, you can't go wrong with this delightful tale of a pair willed to marry each other who nevertheless become a true love match.
Diana and her mother had been living with the late earl since the death of her father, the earl's brother. Now long-lost relative Gavin will take over the estate and Diana's uncle has even made stipulations in his will that encourage Diana and Gavin to marry. Diana is hesitant; Gavin is not, claiming love at first sight.
And funny thing is the reader believes him. It takes Diana a bit longer but I was in love with him very early on. A more appealing hero is not usually found in HRs. He's all male but there's not a jerk bone in his body, unlike the typical arrogant womanizing HR hero. There is a bit of a puzzle about his past life because he's so reticent to talk about himself but it's just enough to make the book more interesting. (Even the heroine has something in her past which influences the way she behaves in the present. All this is well done for such a short book.)
And, as if this lovely romance weren't enough, you even get a pretty good mystery mixed in. Was the late earl's death really accidental? If not, just how was this death accomplished? Tune in to find out.
(BTW, for those readers who like this sort of thing, there's a tad more heat in this romance than you generally find in a Signet Regency. Nothing very explicit, just enough to let you know that the H and h, who marry at about the 2/3 point of the book, have an extremely satisfactory sex life.)
Gavin is a classic alpha male but thankfully without the irritating characteristics. Diana is a a smart, practical and capable woman, who suffers from debilitating social anxiety and low self-esteem. His attention makes her so nervous, that at some point I seriously struggled to sympathize with her. The hero is never ruffled though. He keeps loving her through thick and thin, and in the end I was really glad he did!
Diana Carlyle is shocked and dismayed to discover that her beloved late uncle's will demands that she marry his heir, or else she and her mother will have to try and get by on a pittance of a stipend. Her sense of independence makes her dig her heels in against the union, but she soon finds herself relenting when she discovers that life with Gavin would not be as unpleasant as she'd thought. And when her uncle's death seems less like an accident than previously thought the security of marrying Gavin is too much for Diana to pass up, so she accepts his proposal and settles in for a lifelong marriage of convenience.
But Gavin has other ideas about what their marriage ought to be like and sets out to make his wife love him. But first he must capture the fiend who caused her uncle's demise--a killer who will surely strike again.
What worked for me:
Gavin was an intriguing hero who appears to be very laid back and jaded yet far more with it than he lets on.
The mystery intertwined with the love story was a good one, and even though I thought I had a handle on what was happening with it, the solution ultimately surprised me.
Size-wise Diana was tall and thought she was too large, but Gavin thought she was lush and luscious.
What didn't work for me:
Diana didn't come off as strong as I felt she was touted as being. In fact she was a bit missish in spots, though there was a satisfactory explanation for that given later on in the story.
Overall:
"Miss Carlyle's Curricle" is a pleasant diversion for a rainy afternoon.
Warning: There's a steamy scene in this book.

P.s. please fix errors in chapter 16. The name James was replaced with another's. You'll see.
