Publisher Description
A passionate and exhilarating story that follows the McKenzie family in Civil War-era Florida—from New York Times bestselling author Heather Graham.
Risa Magee, a privileged Yankee beauty, faces mystery and danger when she bravely rows into enemy waters to deliver a warning to a friend. However, nothing has prepared her for the dangers of the heart when she is taken prisoner by Rebel sea captain Jerome McKenzie.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Graham (Rebel; Captive) sets her latest McKenzie family saga in Civil War-era Florida, a refreshing, unique backdrop for that bloody struggle. Most of the action takes place at sea, where swashbuckling rebel captain Jerome McKenzie, skipper of the Lady Varina (after Jefferson Davis's wife), is big, bold, and has Seminole blood running in his veins. Beautiful, bold Risa Magee, a Union general's daughter who nurses the wounded, is his nemesis. Mutual hatred turns into turbulent love--but not before multiple misunderstandings threaten to tear the fragile relationship apart. It's a classic formula historical romance, but Graham does it better than anyone. Assured narratives, deft characterizations and fast-moving plots are givens. But this is also a classic bodice-ripper with chemises, bodices, pantalets and other delicate flimsies strewn throughout. It's not to everyone's taste, but Graham does it well.
Customer Reviews
Well paced story, Civil War period, interesting characters
Back cover: "Nothing in her privilege life had prepared Yankee beauty Risa Magee for the dangers and intrigues of war..until she bravely rowed through nighttime waters to carry a warning to a friend behind Confederate lines. Suddenly, she was the prisoner of a man with rippling bronze muscles, sensual lips, and plundering kisses.
Nothing in his years of battle could have prepared Rebel sea capita in Jerome McKenzie for the desire that ignighted when this lovely, reckless woman brazenly entered his home state of Florida-and his world."
Heather Graham (other pen name Shannon Drake) is one of my favorite writers. Though this was first published in Feb. 1998, it is better than some of the current books that I've read. Heather Graham is a masterful story-teller. Her writing has strong female and male characters with wonderful dynamics between the characters which makes you care about them. This was another well written bokk.
