Summary
A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER AND ONE OF KIRKUS REVIEWS' BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR

It is 1943—the height of the Second World War. With the men away at the front, Berlin has become a city of women.

On the surface, Sigrid Schröder is the model German soldier’s wife: She goes to work every day, does as much with her rations as she can, and dutifully cares for her meddling mother-in-law, all the while ignoring the horrific immoralities of the regime.

But behind this façade is an entirely different Sigrid, a woman of passion who dreams of her former Jewish lover, now lost in the chaos of the war. But Sigrid is not the only one with secrets—she soon finds herself caught between what is right and what is wrong, and what falls somewhere in the shadows between the two . . .

A thoroughly enjoyable book full of surprises to the end. The depiction of everyday life in wartime Berlin is so vivid that you feel you are there, struggling with hardships of every kind, witnessing the radicalization of the law-abiding population, and realising how easy it is to find yourself in the midst of a morally-bankrupt, inhumane dictatorship where a swathe of society is unapologetically dehumanised (!) and making a heroic choice is the only way not to succumb to the monstrous regime. You find yourself wondering what you would have done. Wonderful narrator - no surprise to learn that she is a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company.

I'm sure that a large part of the reason I enjoyed this book so much was excellent narration by Suzanne Bertish -- she really made the characters come to life! I very much enjoyed this book and the characters.

Engrossing account of ordinary lives during wartime Berlin, with an intriguing lead character. Will draw you in and hold your interest. Falls apart in the final third of the book, where it seems the writer ran out of steam and rushed it to an ending. Excellent reader on this one.

I enjoyed this book. It was very realistic and I can imagine that was exactly how life was in WWII Berlin. The character development was great.
