More people should read Toer
I picked this book up while spending six weeks in Bali. Before going, I had never heard of this book or of Pramoedya but I’m glad I purchased it. Toer tells what life was like for a young man called Minke and the people of Indonesia living under Dutch colonial rule in the late 1800s. Issues of race, miscegenation, gender, religion, and social stratification are all explored and depicted through the characters.
