Excellent beginning for a cozy series!
Basically, this is an excellent debut of a cozy mystery series. As with most first-in-series books, it has a lot of backstory, but that is the only negative thing I can say. You meet a large number of characters in fairly short order, but each was fully fleshed out, so I didn't get them confused as I've been known to do when I am first "meeting" a whole new cast. The setting is a character in and of itself, and not to be dismissed. The mystery was an unusual one, with a motive (or several) I hadn't encountered in any other books, which always makes for a more fun read. I mean, you're used to "everyone hates the guys who died because he stole money from a whole lot of people" or "she seduced half the women in town's husbands" or whatever, but this one was completely different.
If you're a cozy reader, this is one you won't want to miss.
Charming & authentic
It's always good to find a cozy mystery which entertains by telling about a local culture. Pine Island should thrive after this well written, well edited book is read. The story line is smooth; the characters blend; it's a fast fun beach read.
