About the Author

John Anthony Bellairs (1938–1991) is an award-winning American author, perhaps best known for his fantasy novel The Face in the Frost. He is also the author of many gothic mystery novels for children and young adults, including The House with a Clock in its Walls (which received both the New York Times Outstanding Book of Award and the American Library Association Children's Books of International Interest Award), The Lamp from the Warlock’s Tomb (which won the Edgar Allen Poe Award), and The Specter from the Magician’s Museum (which won the New York Public Library "Best Books for the Teen Age" Award.

Bellairs' latest scary thriller features 14-year-old Rose Rita Pottinger and good witch Mrs. Zimmermann, who were last seen in "The Letter, the Witch, and the Ring" (1976). Spurred on by a mirrored vision of her mentor, Mrs. Zimmermann, accompanied by Rose Rita, travels to Pennsylvania in hopes of regaining her lost magical powers. While driving through a tunnel, the two are mysteriously transported back in time to 1828, where they meet the Weiss family. The travelers must stop an evil sorcerer before he destroys the Weisses and steals a treasure buried on their farm. Although completed by Strickland after Bellairs' death, the story has not suffered. Careful plotting, fascinating details about the nineteenth-century Pennsylvania Dutch, and gripping suspense (several scenes, especially one in which Rose Rita appears trapped in a cemetery full of emerging corpses, ought not to be read alone late at night) make this one of Bellairs' best. Fans also will be pleased that several more novels await completion.

Mrs. Zimmermann and her young friend, Rose Rita, enter a time warp and are thrown back 200 years. They encounter hexes, black and white magic, ghosts, and sorcery of all kinds. The magical plot is equaled by Guidall’s narration. His voice changes fluidly to reflect the characters and the suspense. He depicts the delightful heroines as effectively as the frightening evil characters.
