Comfortable and practical projects with Home Sewn
My first impression as I peruse the pages of Home Sewn is that it was a very well-designed book. The photographs were inspirational and the images remind me of a comfortable cottage in the country or my Grandma's homey abode. As I scan through the pages to read the home sewn projects, I was captivated by the simplicity and practicality of the well-curated crafts. My favorite would be the floor ottoman pillows. They look adorable yet the more I thought of it it is definitely a functional piece! I actually use two gigantic floor pillows in my living room. But I could use some more in the other rooms of my home! Then there were these pillow book-ends. It was creative and definitely useful! Just like the author I find myself looking for coasters, utensils, or any heavy small object to keep papers and items in place whenever I am working on a project. The pillow book-ends will definitely be a handy tool in times like these. The only caveat I see, which may disappoint quite a few readers, is that there is not enough detail or graphic instruction for the actual step-by-step process in the creation process. This is a craft book, so the expectation is there will be more photographs with very helpful hints on how to put the pieces together. It would probably have been better to follow the format of a recipe book, but alas with the lack of details, it may just serve as an inspirational coffee table book.Perhaps the audience that the author, Cassandra Ellis, is targeting are the more experienced fabric makers. If this is the case, then she would have served her purpose. But still, the projects she selected are still very lovely and appear very simple to create. If anything it certainly gives a dose of creative inspiration to anyone who reads this book!

Cassandra Ellis' book called 'Home Sewn' is lovely. So lovely. Beautiful, muted photographs and projects that are luxurious, but not overdone. Her choices of fabrics are amazing as well: linen, silk, voile, organdy and lots of cotton. Even leather, which I've never sewn on.
Projects include pillows, curtains, lap napkins and her favorite--linen ottomans which she suggests filling with leftover fabric scraps. And elegant addition to your home, and wisely filled with extra fabric. I find that ingenious.
Her book is divided into sections called Living with sewing projects for main areas of the home, Resting with bedding and bedroom pretties. The last chapter is Eating & Sharing with pieces for using and giving.
Ellis' dialogue throughout the book is sweet and entertaining as well. Very engaging. Perfect gift book. Beautifully presented and clever. I won't be giving my copy away. A keeper!

Weekends are made for sewing, as far as I'm concerned.
This summer I have branched out beyond my simple (yet elegant!) toile aprons and skirts to dresses and tunics.
Happily, I've discovered that the more I sew, the more I want to sew more things.
Which is why I jumped at the chance to review HOME SEWN by Cassandra Ellis.
Until now, my sewing experience has been strictly limited to simple clothing items: aprons, skirts, and now dresses.
But, as I flip through the pages of Home Sewn, I am inspired to try some of the simple, but very lovely projects. The linen napkins, the large lounging pillows and even a quilt will be on my 'to sew' list soon. I even found myself browsing linen by the yard on Etsy, in preparation.
If like me, you are interested in dipping your toe into sewing for home, pick up a copy of Home Sewn. You will be inspired.
Highly recommended.

Home Sewn by Cassandra Ellis was released this month and is full of modern, elegant projects for a home-designer who has a space to call their own. All of the projects match and span each room in a home. Ellis's style crosses a bohemian mix of colors and patterns, often scrapped together, with plenty of neutrals to keep things from looking busy. Her attention to quality fabrics such as canvas, leathers, and linens elevate simple quilt patterns and easy square designs.
Projects like a headboard, various curtains, a room divider, and hanging lamp shade are gorgeous, but would do best in a somewhat large and airy home. Ellis also includes smaller projects that are more versatile: an ottoman (my favorite project in the book and also hers), book ends, heating pack, napkins, and pillows (all using a simple square or rectangular cut), and a bulletin board. Though one could easily make these items without a design, Ellis does the guess work for you on best sizing and fillers.
With her fresh take on fabric choices, I appreciated Ellis's sensitivity to cost (often using re-purposed or scrap bits of otherwise expensive materials) and her specification of which linen or leather weight to use on various projects. Some patterns give dimensions to make your own pattern, others use a downloadable design, and some use a kit that can be ordered separately (like the lamp shade). Though we all may not have a use in our home layout for the full scope of ideas presented, Ellis's beautiful vision for what a home can look like, all done with our own two hands, is inspirational, and accessible to sewers with all levels of experience.

Okay, I am very much a wanna-be sewer (I hate typing that word...seamstress?)
First off, this book is really lovely. It's not huge; there are a limited number of projects for sewing for your home. I loved many of them. That said, some of them, I probably could have figured out myself (big square bolster, etc). But the pictures are lovely and it has that certain je ne sais quoi that makes a book an experience...something that inspires and creates a feel and sense of place. All the more important in a home decor book!
I think this book is a great starting place for home decor projects. The ideas are simple and nice. Very much the minimalist linen look. I love it. If you tend toward a different aesthetic, I would not recommend it though the simple ideas could undoubtedly be used with a different flair.
There are some ideas that are cool that I just don't see myself doing, like the hand-painted canvas cloth. There are also others that, like I said, I could probably figure out but will probably try (making tea towels) just to see how much better they are with an expert guide!
All in all, there is nothing terribly new covered here. But I felt the solid aesthetic coupled with simple, inspirational projects was worth the buy.
I received this book free in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
