About this audiobook

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • COMING SOON TO APPLE TV+ • A “mind-blowing” (Entertainment Weekly) speculative thriller about an ordinary man who awakens in a world inexplicably different from the reality he thought he knew—from the author of Upgrade, Recursion, and the Wayward Pines trilogy

“Are you happy with your life?”

Those are the last words Jason Dessen hears before the kidnapper knocks him unconscious.

Before he awakens to find himself strapped to a gurney, surrounded by strangers in hazmat suits.

Before a man he’s never met smiles down at him and says, “Welcome back, my friend.”

In this world he’s woken up to, Jason’s life is not the one he knows. His wife is not his wife. His son was never born. And Jason is not an ordinary college professor but a celebrated genius who has achieved something remarkable. Something impossible.

Is it this life or the other that’s the dream? And even if the home he remembers is real, how will Jason make it back to the family he loves?

From the bestselling author Blake Crouch, Dark Matter is a mind-bending thriller about choices, paths not taken, and how far we’ll go to claim the lives we dream of.

Probably the worst book I've read in years. The voice acting and writing are terrible. The author rehashes ideas that are better handled by dozens of other works. He writes in the first person present without any reason or understanding of the literary function of that mode. The plot is obvious self-gratification power fantasy. It's devoid of imagination. This novel screams the words "first draft".

The narrator has a bit of Christian Bail Batman in his voice, something that is distracting at times. However, the most unappealing thing about the narrator is when he does female voices. The overall story is good. It is a combination of many well known stories. It's a Wonderful Life, The Time Machine, etc. The main driving force of the book is a husband's love for his wife and family. However, the reader/listener isn't given evidence to where this love comes from, other than the cliche, shallow stereotypes. In contrast, a secondary interaction the protagonist has with another woman is far more interesting and engaging. The ending is painfully predictable (and I wasn't trying to figure it out), but the absolute ending is very weak and shallow.

A mind bending ride. The story could have followed any number of alternate story lines, all just as real as this one. In some ways, I wish it followed a different one, but a crazy ride in any case. Really makes you think about the value of your own life and experiences.
