Notwithstanding (Vintage International) Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 690 ratings

As the world around it marches forward, the bucolic English village of Notwithstanding remains unchanged. It is, as it always has been, a place of pubs and cricket pitches, where local eccentrics—a retired colonel who has eschewed clothes, a spiritualist living with the ghost of her husband, and a dog named Archibald Scott-Moncrieff—almost fit in. In this delightfully evocative collection of stories, in which a young couple falls in and out of love by letter alone, an eleven-year-old boy battles a monstrous fish, and a man of the cloth has a premonition of death, Louis de Bernières conjures up a rural idyll long since forgotten. Funny, bittersweet, and deeply felt, Notwithstanding is the bestselling author of Corelli’s Mandolin at his most enchanting.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“The experience of reading this collection is rather like being wrapped in a tartan blanket and handed a nice mug of cocoa.” —The Guardian

“Sketches of lives that settle into the atmosphere of a place and make it unique. . . . The creator of Captain Corelli is fond of an exotic setting and he has found one in his own backyard.” —
The Times (London)

“A timely examination of the charming and, at times, heart-wrenchingly sad aspects of English village life. . . . De Bernières’ alchemy is to turn characters who seem destined for farce into nuanced beings.” —
Financial Times

“Comic, benignly forgiving and shot through with threads of nostalgic regret. De Bernières has a big heart.” —
The Independent

“An amusing collection. . . . [De Bernières] perfectly captures the peculiarities, the quirks, and the tenor of a particular time and place with good humor and great affection. Readers will enjoy being transported to Notwithstanding, where they will be introduced to a variety of colorful characters, whose lives are linked together by an accident of location and an abundance of community spirit. Each individual story is a delightful nugget; the collection as a whole, a delectable feast."

I fell in love with de Bernieres on the basis of "Birds without Wings" and "Corelli's Mandolin", two of the most extraordinarily compelling historical novels in the English language. They are both long books that leave an indelible impression because of the context -- world war in Turkey and in Greece -- and the care the author takes with the character development.

"Notwithstanding" is a short, happy read of sketches of residents in the English town of Notwithstanding. It's a lovely read that also demonstrates the author's skill at creating marvelous charactors. But it won't change your life. "Birds without Wings" and "Corelli's Mandolin" will.

I'm still reading the book Notwithstanding. It's funny, quirky, poignant and I'm really curious to discover where the author is going with it. It's a series of short stories, some of which continue from previous ones, centered around the village of Notwithstanding, which appears, from references to nearby towns, to be in Surrey, England. It's Agatha Christie's village life without the murders - eccentric characters, village nosiness, everyone knows everyone. I'm thoroughly enjoying it and can recommend it as a light read just for fun.

This lovely book was recommended by a dear friend who thought I would love it. And I do. It's a collection of stories set in a bucolic English village, about the activities of an array of diverse, hilarious, sometimes sad inhabitants you may well grow to love. It's charm is a panacea for the disturbing news of the day. By all means, treat yourself and escape to Notwithstanding!

Louis de Bernieres continues to write beautifully here, about a village called Notwithstanding. Each chapter is about one of the characters in the village, and they are all charming. It's an easy read, but rich and beautifully crafted, and I'd recommend it highly, just as I'd recommend his other books, but if you enjoy this, you'll especially enjoy The Dust that Falls from Dreams.

Some heartfelt stories that intertwine and capture the real nature of a quintecential English village
Reviewed in the United States on June 18, 2017
If you liked The Dust That Falls From Dreams you'll enjoy this book of subtly related, imaginitive studies of the people and circumstances of a mid-twentieth century English village. It might be compared to a tasting menu, in that while delicious and interesting, it is never as satisfying as a traditional repast. And, compared to the depth, breadth and power of Birds Without Wings, it is thin gruel indeed.

This book is absolutely charming, a wonderful read and antidote to the horrible happenings reported in world news. As one would expect of Louis de Bernieres it is beautifully written and gives a vivid, funny, touching, sad and kindly picture of life in an English village; life as it could be if we humans would allow it.

He is a brilliant storyteller. He taps into just what makes us tick. I’m starting to see parallels with my village (38 years in my cottage) and clearly recognise certain people too. You’ll find this entertaining even if you live in an inner-city tower block on the 11th floor.

Some stories are good but some are too gloomy for my taste. It gets kind of repetitive too.
Book condition is excellent.

I have a soft spot for books set in English (or Irish) villages with lots of interesting characters. This book fitted the bill perfectly.
I was feeling unwell when I started, read it in one day and felt much better afterwords. The perfect tonic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wunderbar schöne Geschichten
Reviewed in Germany on September 1, 2014
