3.8 3.8 out of 5 stars 4,428 ratings

FBI Profiler Pierce Quincy and Officer Rainie Conner return in a baffling cold case in this short story from #1 New York Times bestselling author Lisa Gardner.

A young woman is found strangled in the stairwell of a college library, only her sneakers missing. With no physical evidence, no signs of sexual assault, and no witnesses, all the police have to go on are the three men who were in the library with her: her boyfriend and two campus security guards...all of whom have secrets, none of whom can be proven guilty.

Five years later, ex-FBI profiler Pierce Quincy and his wife, former police officer Rainie Conner, agree to consult on the still-unsolved case, delving into deep background to comb for any clue that will lead to the woman's murderer. But with no leads and the case colder than the body, will they be able to build a case against one of the three suspects, or is there a fourth man out there? And if the killer has eluded the police this long, how far will he go to ensure justice is never served?

Includes an excerpt of Lisa Gardner’s bestselling thriller, Right Behind You.

A self-described research junkie, #1 New York Times bestselling author Lisa Gardner has parlayed her interest in police procedure, criminal minds and twisted plots into a streak of internationally recognized novels. Her 2010 novel, THE NEIGHBOR, won Best Thriller from the International Thriller Writers. Most recently, she was honored with the Silver Bullet Award for her work with at-risk kids and rescue animals.

Lisa's latest series features Frankie Elkin, an everyday average woman who specializes in finding missing people. When the locals have given up, when the media has never bothered to care, Frankie takes on the challenge from finding a disappeared Haitian teen in Mattapan (BEFORE SHE DISAPPEARED), to a vanished hiker in the wilds of Wyoming (ONE STEP TOO FAR), to a possibly kidnapped younger sister of a serial killer on a remote island in the Pacific (STILL SEE YOU EVERYWHERE).

Her other series include the FBI Profilers, Detective D.D. Warren and PI Tessa Leoni. When not writing, Lisa loves to hike, travel the world, and yes, read, read, read!

A Lisa Gardner novella!
4 Stars
A Lisa Gardner novella!
The 4th Man by Lisa Gardner is An FBI Profiler/Detective D.D. Warren Story. Sergeant Detective D.D. Warren is a Boston homicide detective working cold cases. Her latest case is the murder of Jaylin Banks that occurred at a local Boston college ten years ago. Jaylin had been found in one of the stairwells by a campus security guard. The police have no physical evidence of the killer and there was little violence involved. The only thing that was missing was Jaylin’s dirty white keds. Their only hope is getting a confession from one of their suspects. Warren has brought in the top three suspects to be questioned by profiling expert, Pierce Quincy and his wife, Officer Rainie Connor. If one of these three men did not commit the crime, then it is the unknown fourth man. Will they finally get justice for Jaylin Banks by identifying her killer? The 4th Man is well-written, has a good pace, and is very easy to read. I appreciate the characters and their method of interrogation and investigation. The 4th Man is a very (extremely) short story that can be finished in about 30 to 45 minutes (depending on how fast you read). The mystery is interesting (unique) and most people will be surprised the killer’s identity. I give The 4th Man 4 out of 5 stars. I wish the story had been just a little longer. I felt that the whole story was too rushed. A preview of Lisa Gardner’s next book is included (and it is very good).

Have to say that I was shocked at the reason for the murder. I've never heard of such a thing.

I rated it four stars as the ending felt a tad rushed. I adore Lisa Gardner and ALL of her work but this particular story was a tad formula for her normal style. Still, I love the voice she gives D.D. Warren and it rang true even in this short story. For a quick read, I don't feel cheated. I don't think anyone who is a fan will be disappointed. The authors note is a nice touch and makes me anxious for the next amazing novel!

To short, the author rushes through, not much going on but it was an ok read. Not much to talk about so I will leave it at that

The narrators did a great job from true emotions to the pain and sorrow. Great character voices, a nice normal voice. There were no background noises, no volume changes, could not tell when they took a break. They gave you a very enjoyable listen that I totally got lost in.

I’ve read all of Lisa Gardners books in order. I must say this is the strangest. But unfortunately it was based on a true story. How strange and demented some people are

I would recommend this book

Good story of behind the scenes investigation. Surprised at identity of guilty party. Made for a good mystery. Always enjoy D D Warren

Lisa Gardner is as wonderful and devious in this short story as in her full books. Her command of language for each person involved in composer of a short story is intoxication. She can say more in a few pages than some cannot accomplish in thirty.

Well it had both of my favorite characters but for the price I paid it was r little short. I thought I bought a novel but guess not. Disappointed

This is what I call a short story. It involves my two favorite Lisa Gardner characters: Quincy and Rainie. I thought they were long gone, only to reside on a shelf waiting for new fans of the author. I jumped at the chance to find out how they were doing.
Called in to consult on a 10-year old homicide case, Quincy and Rainie assist D.D. Warren interview the possible suspects. There are four interview rooms, three of which hold a suspect. The fourth room sits empty. Is the killer one of the three suspects, or an elusive 4th unknown? Hence the title.
It's difficult for me to give a glowing review, simply because there's just not much to talk about. The story lacks the development of characters I'm used to. It doesn't have the depth of research facts so much a part of Lisa's books. Because of that, I'm giving it a so-so. Nothing negative, just a good short story.
