About this ebook

NOBEL PRIZE WINNER From the acclaimed, bestselling author of The Remains of the Day comes “a Gothic tour de force" (The New York Times) with an extraordinary twist—a moving, suspenseful, beautifully atmospheric modern classic.

As children, Kathy, Ruth, and Tommy were students at Hailsham, an exclusive boarding school secluded in the English countryside. It was a place of mercurial cliques and mysterious rules where teachers were constantly reminding their charges of how special they were.

Now, years later, Kathy is a young woman. Ruth and Tommy have reentered her life. And for the first time she is beginning to look back at their shared past and understand just what it is that makes them special—and how that gift will shape the rest of their time together.

Ugh. The characters were ok (though a but whiny) but the plot was transparent. My wife and I both figured out the primary plot points within the first 30-40 pages. There was one question which I did not know the answer to until near-ish the end (my wife figured it out) but even that was a let down when it was finally revealed Additionally, the book just sort of ended...a very unsatisfying end brought on mostly because the climax of the story was a boring conversation which anyone with a bit of foresight saw coming 100 pages beforehand. Too bad. I had such high hopes based on the reviews I had seen. =( (And the movie was even worse...ugh.) The one bright spot was that the narrator (I listened to the audiobook) was excellent. She really has a gift for inflection and voices.

Started refreshingly subtle and intriguing. Then about 1/2 or 2/3 through the book, the author seems to have lost his grip on those defining and unique aspects of the story. After R o t D, I was a little disappointed yet intrigued by his versatility of writing style. I'll definitely read more of his books though.

I wasn't sure if I'd be able to get into this novel after reading the first few chapters. It definitely wasn't what I was imagining from the way people were talking about it. However, once the first part started to come to a close, I couldn't put the book down. I ended up staying awake and powering through the other two thirds, finishing it well after dawn. The end is very powerful, but the real beauty of the book doesn't present itself until you look back on the entire thing. Give this one a chance!
