About this ebook

NATIONAL BESTSELLER • A symphonic novel of love and war, childhood and class, guilt and forgiveness that provides all the satisfaction of a brilliant narrative and the provocation we have come to expect from the acclaimed Booker Prize–winning, internationally bestselling author.

On a hot summer day in 1935, thirteen-year-old Briony Tallis witnesses a moment’s flirtation between her older sister, Cecilia, and Robbie Turner, the son of a servant and Cecilia’s childhood friend. But Briony’s incomplete grasp of adult motives—together with her precocious literary gifts—brings about a crime that will change all their lives.

As it follows that crime’s repercussions through the chaos and carnage of World War II and into the close of the twentieth century, Atonement engages the reader on every conceivable level, with an ease and authority that mark it as a genuine masterpiece.

Don’t miss Ian McEwan’s new novel, Lessons.

Interesting and thought provoking. Very worthy of discussion. One of the best endings for a book I've ever read—very sad but simple. Sometimes descriptions were a little unnecessary and the vocabulary was very tough (there were so many large words I couldn't even find the time to look them up on Google). Definitely a good read and I probably would've enjoyed it more if I wasn't forced to read it for school.

The ending of part three left me with so many questions, and the following postscript is absolutely devastating. At times the book can unload you with unnecessary information, or maybe the description of a scene is overdrawn; but this is a great story, with a true to life ending that really tugs at your heart strings.

McEwan is an awesome writer. This novel starts out slow but picks up at the halfway point. I would not call this a love story as some have. It is an excellent account of World War II's Operation Dynamo and the days leading up to the Battle of Britain. His prose is so vividly detailed that I feel like I have seen the movie even though I have not. Bravo.
