Engaged to Die Audible Audiobook – Unabridged

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 126 ratings

At the Death on Demand Bookstore - "the best mystery bookstore east of Atlanta" - somebody always seems to turn up dead. In Hart's latest installment, charming owners Annie and Max Darling return to investigate a mysterious death at an art gallery opening on their South Carolina island.

When heiress and gallery owner Virginia Neville hosts a bash for an important new collection, she plans to announce her engagement to a much younger man. But then murder crashes the party, and Max is called in to investigate while Annie takes matters into her own hands. Virginia's family members are not the only suspects - someone close to Annie looks guilty as well.

Series devotees will rejoice as Annie and Max's banter recalls the high jinks of Nick and Nora Charles.

I’ve heard about this award winning author for years and decided to give one of her mysteries a try. The book was initially strong on the cozy side, but it quickly became clear that the premise was a bit too far fetched to suit my taste. The idea of the police agreeing to let mystery bookshop owner Annie, an untrained civilian, work alongside them on a murder investigation is a tad unbelievable. Annie argues with the police, challenges them, and basically calls the shots. Her rich, good-looking doting husband comes across as a touch too good to be true. While I enjoyed the famous mystery novel references tossed in, the second half of the book dragged on, collapsing under the weight of the endless rehashing and debate about the murder. For the first time, I skipped to the end to find out who done it. And when I did, I was surprised to learn that the writer used the oldest trick in the book.

As always, Carolyn Hart's mysteries do not disappoint. I enjoyed the light entertainment...but confess I figured out whodunnit about halfway through.
