Publisher Description

Napoleon's Buttons is the fascinating account of seventeen groups of molecules that have greatly influenced the course of history. These molecules provided the impetus for early exploration, and made possible the voyages of discovery that ensued. The molecules resulted in grand feats of engineering and spurred advances in medicine and law; they determined what we now eat, drink, and wear. A change as small as the position of an atom can lead to enormous alterations in the properties of a substance-which, in turn, can result in great historical shifts.

With lively prose and an eye for colorful and unusual details, Le Couteur and Burreson offer a novel way to understand the shaping of civilization and the workings of our contemporary world.

Mixed feelings

Really good book, the connections between pivotal historic events and the characteristics of mere molecules are incredibly satisfying to learn about. The transitions between the end of a chapter and the beginning are definitely the best part as you not only see the progress of these Chemical compounds, but the progress of human history. I however have mixed feelings. I was told to read the book and complete some questions for an extra credit grade in my AP Chemistry class. I could not buy the book in paperback or hardcover so I proceeded to redeem a twenty-five dollar gift card and bought the book online ( as you may be able to tell). The world-renown Toronto music artist Drake released his highly-anticipated album "Views" the same weekend. To my dismay I read all 582 electronic pages of this novel only to learn that all the questions could be answered by the introduction and the conclusion. I am not able to purchase Drake's new album at this current time. I am distraught with the circumstances i find myself in.
