A deadly past refuses to stay buried in Olivia Kiernan’s masterful new novel

Death is no stranger to Detective Chief Superintendent Frankie Sheehan, but she isn’t the only one from her small, coastal suburb to be intimately acquainted with it. Years ago, teenager Seán Hennessey shocked the tight-knit community when he was convicted of the brutal murder of his parents and attempted slaying of his sister, though he always maintained his innocence. Now, Seán is finally being released from prison—but when his newfound freedom coincides with the discovery of two bodies, the alleged connection between the cases only serves to pull Frankie further from answers even as it draws her closer to her town’s hidden darkness. With a television documentary revisiting Seán’s sentence pushing the public’s sympathies into conflict on a weekly basis, a rabid media pressuring the police like never before, and a rising body count, Frankie will need all of her resources if she is not only to catch a killer, but put to rest what really happened all those years ago.

A dark, irresistible cocktail of secrets, murder, and family, Olivia Kiernan’s latest is an impossible-to-put-down triumph.

Another Good Thriller
Do you ever switch between a book and the audio version? I very rarely ever do this but for The Killer in Me I did. This thriller is good, but the accents are so thick in the audio book, as the story started to come together a little over half way through I was afraid I would miss something. I usually like the English accents but if they have a thick Irish or Scottish accent sometimes, they are hard to pick up every word on audio. I still love all accents though, don’t get me wrong!Frankie Sheehan is the lead detective in The Killer in Me. Years ago in her small town, before she was on the force, Sean Hennessey shocked the town by brutally murdering his parents and attempting to kill his parents. He was just a boy himself at the time. Now after serving his sentence he is being released. Though he has maintained his innocence throughout his sentence, Sheehan doesn’t believe him. Then when two dead bodies turn up the same time he is released, Sheehan knows something is going on and must get to the bottom of it, and quick! This novel will pull you in and you will feel like you know the whole town. It’s the place where everyone goes to the same pub and everyone knows everyone’s families. Which means if anyone else ends up dead, it will be someone they all know.

The story kept me guessing to the end. It makes you wonder how many times someone is wrongly imprisoned at a young age and left without family support to try and navigate their way through their teen years, a time when passions run high and actions precede thought.

I gave this book 4 stars only because the beginning was a bit slow starting out. That being said, the pace quickly picked up and was very hard to put down. I loved the characters and how their lives intertwined with this great mystery/crime fiction/ police procedural. I really love a book with a lot of twists and turns, and the author, Olivia Kiernan definitely delivers here. This is book 2 in a series featuring detective Frankie Sheehan and even though I have not yet read book 1, it can be read as a stand alone. I definitely do plan on reading the author's first book and do recommend this book.

Seán Hennessey was accused and convicted of killing his parents, and wounding his sister years earlier, but now has been released. Frankie's sister-in-law, with the charity, Justice Meets Justice, asks Frankie to reconsider-that Seán may be innocent. As Frankie meets with him, she receives notice that 2 people are found dead in the local church.
Frankie starts to wonder if mistakes were made in the Hennessey case, and if Seán's confession was coerced. As a new documentary about Séan is being released, Frankie keeps digging.
How close do we come to knowing what we are capable of doing?
Scary.

The Killer in Me by Olivia Kiernan is a suspense-laden mystery. Although this newest release is the second installment in the Frankie Sheehan series, it can be read as a standalone. However, I highly recommend the previous novel as well.

Detective Chief Superintendent Frankie Sheehan is uneasy when her sister-in-law Tanya West asks her to look into Seán Hennessy’s case. Tanya is working with Justice Meets Justice, a non-profit organization that investigates possible miscarriages of justice. Although convicted of murdering his parents and the attempted murder of his younger sister, Seán has always maintained his innocence. Recently released from prison, he is also cooperating with a documentary which is airing weekly. Hoping to find evidence that Seán was wrongly convicted, Tanya believes Frankie might find evidence that will exonerate him.

Reluctantly agreeing to review the case, Frankie is soon busy with a current investigation into the vexing murders of Geraldine and Alan Shine. Their bodies appear to be carefully staged with puzzling clues left at the scene. Working closely with her partner Barry “Baz” Harwood and the rest of her team, Frankie is frustrated by a lack of evidence. The few clues they uncover lead to dead ends which leaves them struggling to understand why the couple was targeted for murder. When a third body is discovered, Frankie is under even more pressure to unmask the killer(s). She, Baz and the rest of the squad feverishly work around the clock to find the evidence they need to find out the murderer’s identity.

In between working the current investigation,Frankie combs through Seán’s case files. She is troubled by some of the information she finds and she begins to believe Seán may be telling the truth. Frankie thinks she might know what happened that terrible day, but will she find the evidence she needs to prove her theory?

The Killer in Me is a meticulously-plotted and tension filled mystery. Frankie is a multi-layered and fascinating character. The storyline is intriguing and the investigations are interesting and fast-paced. As the pieces of the puzzle rapidly fall into place, Olivia Kiernan brings this perplexing mystery to a twist-filled, jaw-dropping conclusion. Readers of the genre are sure to enjoy this latest addition to the Frankie Sheehan series.

The Killer in Me is the second book in Olivia Kiernan’s DCS Frankie Sheehan series. In the opening pages, Frankie is asked to look again at a seventeen-year-old case by her sister-in-law, Tanya West. Sean Hennessy was convicted of the murder of his parents and the attempted murder of his younger sister. Now, with the help of a new documentary and a charity, Justice Meets Justice, he is trying to appeal his earlier conviction. But Frankie is still convinced of his guilt. However, this still doesn’t stop her from taking an interest in the case and looking at it again. Now, with Sean’s return to his hometown, a series of new murders take place. But is Sean responsible as the media and the police come to believe? What would make him commit these murders when he is trying to protest his innocence for the murder of his parents?

Olivia Kiernan’s engaging writing draws you into the story from the very first page. I really liked DCS Frankie Sheehan in the first book, Too Close To Breathe, and she’s fast becoming a favourite character of mine in crime fiction. She is also one of the most intriguing characters I’ve come across recently. There are many different strands to these investigations that Frankie has to navigate her way through to get to the truth.

In the opening pages, a fresh investigation launches when the bodies of a man and woman, husband and wife, are found outside a church. The priest is one of the first to shoot to the top of the list of suspects. But it isn’t long before a link is drawn to Sean Hennessy. The crime scene has been designed to send the police a message. But what message?

I was really intrigued by both the fresh murders which have taken place and Sean Hennessy’s appeal to overturn his conviction. Like Frankie, I couldn’t really see how his new case could be presented, especially after the damming evidence against him the first time around. I could see there would have to be something pretty spectacular that would need to come to light, to be within a chance of having his guilty verdict overturned.

The plot really makes you think about the characters, especially those who are involved in the crime. I found that I was studying those who came under suspicion even more as I was reading. The police procedural aspect of the plot feels really authentic. I particularly liked the small-town setting on the coast of Ireland as well. Olivia Kiernan brings to landscape life, and she makes you feel as though you are there. It’s what makes this book really atmospheric.

Olivia Kiernan has created another brilliant, addictive read. I’m really excited to catch up on the third book. This is turning into a top crime series, and I would highly recommend it to crime fiction lovers.

I enjoyed this author’s first novel but found this to be quite ordinary. Why Liz Nugent would suggest reading this book with the light on escapes me. Also includes a lot of swearing. If the lead detective was supposed to have a feeling for catching killers I’m afraid I missed it.
