NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Set in the aftermath of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, this action-packed prequel to the hotly anticipated videogame Battlefront II introduces the Empire’s elite force: Inferno Squad.

After the humiliating theft of the Death Star plans and the destruction of the battle station, the Empire is on the defensive. But not for long. In retaliation, the elite Imperial soldiers of Inferno Squad have been called in for the crucial mission of infiltrating and eliminating the Partisans—the rebel faction once led by notorious Republic freedom fighter Saw Gerrera.

Following the death of their leader, the Partisans have carried on his extremist legacy, determined to thwart the Empire—no matter the cost. Now Inferno Squad must prove its status as the best of the best and take down the Partisans from within. But the growing threat of being discovered in their enemy’s midst turns an already dangerous operation into a do-or-die acid test they dare not fail. To protect and preserve the Empire, to what lengths will Inferno Squad go . . . and how far beyond them?

The Rebellion may have heroes like Jyn Erso and Luke Skywalker. But the Empire has Inferno Squad.

Award-winning and eight-time New York Times bestselling author Christie Golden has written nearly fifty novels and several short stories in the fields of science fiction, fantasy and horror. Among her many projects are over a dozen Star Trek novels, a similar number for gaming giant Blizzard’s World of Warcraft and StarCraft novels, three books in the nine-book Star Wars series, Fate of the Jedi, which she co-wrote with Troy Denning and the late and greatly missed Aaron Allston, and the novelization of Star Wars: The Clone Wars unaired episodes, Dark Disciple, which many reviews and lists have cited as the best of the new canon novels.

2014 saw the publication of no fewer than four novels. They were the highly successful World of Warcraft novel, War Crimes; Blackbeard: The Lost Journal, a companion book to the video game “Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag”; a second Assassin’s Creed book, “Assassin’s Creed: Unity--Abstergo Employee Handbook” and The Accidental Knight, a novel set in the world of Cryptozoic’s online card game, HEX.

2015 saw only one book published, but it was a big one- her fourth Star Wars novel, Star Wars: The Clone Wars—Dark Disciple, novel featuring the popular characters Asajj Ventress and Quinlan Vos.

In 2016, Golden revisited two favorite franchises with Warcraft: Durotan, the prequel novel to the movie, Warcraft, based on Blizzard’s games, as well as the official novelization of the film itself. November 15 sees her returning to the world of Assassin’s Creed with Assassin’s Creed: Heresy, in which she introduces high-ranking Templar Simon Hathaway, who explores history at the side of Joan of Arc. Her September short story “Promises to Keep,” in the anthology Fractures, in contrast, marks her first exploration into the world of Halo

Golden launched the TSR Ravenloft line in 1991 with her first novel, the highly successful Vampire of the Mists, which introduced elven vampire Jander Sunstar. To the best of her knowledge, she is the creator of the elven vampire archetype in fantasy fiction. Several original fantasy novels include On Fire’s Wings, In Stone’s Clasp and Under Sea’s Shadow, the first three in her multi-book fantasy series “The Final Dance”. She is delighted to see her first original novels, Instrument of Fate and In Stone’s Clasp, available in an entirely new format as online books nearly fifteen years after their original publication.

Prior to her job as prolific bestselling novelist, Golden attended the University of Virginia, where she won the Clay E. Delauney Award for Playwrighting. She worked at USA Today and served as an editor at Orbit Video Magazine and The Retired Officer Magazine. She also worked as a teacher with the Writer’s Digest School, and currently accepts clients for in-depth critiquing. You can find her at christiegolden.com, on Facebook as Christie Golden, and on Twitter @ChristieGolden.

Born in Atlanta, Georgia with stints in Michigan, Virginia, Colorado, Tennessee, and Texas, Golden has returned to Virginia for a spell.

A damn good read!

A damn good read!
I'm a big fan of the Star Wars novels. I prefer them over the movies, and I've read nearly all of the new canon and many legends novels.Admittedly, I had a hard time getting through the first 60-70 pages of Inferno Squad, which surprised me because Christie Golden's Dark Disciple is my 2nd favorite book of the new canon. (Lost Stars is #1). I had a difficult time getting invested in the characters and their missions. However, I am glad that I stuck it out. By the end, I was hooked. I read the final 150 pages in a single sitting. I found myself connecting with the characters' moral dilemmas and their pain. Ultimately, it is an excellent read.If you're mainly a Star Wars fan for Jedi magic and lightsaber duels, this probably isn't your cup of joe, but if you'd appreciate a good espionage story that is set in the same universe, this book is worth your money and time.Also- I've never played any Star Wars video games. You don't need to know anything about the Battlefront game to enjoy this book.

This is a Star Wars canon novel set after A New Hope, that is told from the perspective of the "regular" (non-sith) imperials. The main character, Iden Versio, leads an elite Imperial unit called "Inferno Squad" which is tasked with tracking down and eliminating the remnants of Saw Gerrera's partisans, who are still carrying out attacks separate from the rebels. The book actually begins with the destruction of the first Death Star, with Iden surviving the battle and crashing on Yavin IV.

The book is actually a setup for the video game Battlefront II and basically follows Iden and her team as they embark on a series of missions to infiltrate and then take down various rebel groups. What is interesting about the book is that it is written from the perspective that the Empire is the peaceful entity in the galaxy and the rebels are terrorists trying to disrupt life in the otherwise peaceful and lawful Empire.

The book tells a good story and is a fairly easy read. It is one of the shorter adult canon novels (about 330 pages) and can be read in a couple of days (depending on how much time you have to read). You do not need to have followed the characters in the video games to follow the story or connect with the characters. It is well-written and definitely leaves open the possibility of future novels based around the group. So, if you are someone who reads some, but not all, of the novels, this is a good one.

A very good read and one I recommend, but with a caveat. Don't read this expecting for it to expand the Star Wars universe. If you just want to know the backstory on the characters for the upcoming Battlefront II, then I give this a hearty 5 stars.

As to why I give the book four stars, all I can say without spoilers is that the plot is very narrowly focused on the main characters and those immediately around them.

The characters themselves are intriguing, and Iden (the main protagonist) is particularly well developed, but IMO she shows less character growth through the story than other members of the squad.

There is a tie in to the larger Star Wars story, but it feels underwhelming to me, mostly because the character is somewhat obscure for casual fans, and only has a minor (granted, important) part to play in the plot.

Inferno Squad was my 9th novel out of the 'canon' novels. It usually takes me anywhere from 3weeks to a couple of months to complete reading novels. What w/ my schedule, when I have time, & I always start blasting through a couple of chapters of what I decide will be my next book. I wind up reading 2 at a time, I drive myself nuts! Anyway, from the day this was released, I purchased it on Kindle & flew threw it in less than 6 days. I think I was able to because the story moves at a really decent clip from the get-go. I honestly can't even think of any part that was slow or boring or "dragging". I wasn't exactly thrilled w/ a few of the new novels. Obviously everyone's different & to each their own, but Bloodline & Catalyst were both my LEAST favorite, I thought they both were Boring. Lost Stars was EXCELLENT, as was Dark Disciple (Golden), & Lords of The Sith was fairly entertaining. A lot of the Marvel titles are great also. And I'm also halfway through the first Battlefront book 'Twilight Co " it too is exciting & moves fast. I'm not a gamer, at all. I hear though that it's AWESOME, & lastly I do recommend this title to anyone who reads/is a SW fan. I kind of want to keep reading adventures & missions of Iden Versio & her squad. It'd be so cool if it became a book series!

The story has a fast pace with great characters. If you played Battlefront 2 campaign, you'll notice some of the characters behaviors foreshadows what they'll end up becoming in the future. Enjoyable and entertaining, though I would dare to say the book is way more fun than the campaign in Battlefront 2.

If Paul S. Kemp’s exceptional “Lords of the Sith” and Claudia Gray’s “Lost Stars” represent one side of the quality-spectrum of the new canon-Star Wars novels, and Timothy Zahn’s “Thrawn” and Kevin Hearne’s “Heir to the Jedi” represent…er…the other end, then Christie Golden’s “Battlefront II: Inferno Squad” falls squarely in the middle of the pack: competently written, never a total narrative drag, but rarely all that compelling.

While the premise itself is a tasty one – in the aftermath of the first Death Star’s destruction, a small squad of Imperial soldiers are tasked with infiltrating the remnants of Saw Gerrera’s Partisans – the overall execution feels disappointingly safe. Part of the blame falls on the constraints created by the new canon, something that has negatively impacted a lot of the more recent Star Wars novels. Much of “Inferno Squad” feels designed less to tell a compelling story and to connect dots that fit in snugly within the pre-prescribed lines of other, “bigger” Star Wars stories. While the Story Group’s desire to keep a clean, consistent new canon is appreciated, I wouldn’t mind if the authors of some of these new Star Wars stories broke from the existing broader narrative and told stories that were separate from the rest of the canon, especially if it meant that we got tales that felt less constrained and were more daring. For my money, it would go a long way towards a Star Wars universe that was more creatively fulfilling.

And yet, there IS stuff to appreciate here. Iden Versio, the novel’s main character, is one of the more interesting and layered new protagonists we’ve gotten in the new canon, and I’m looking forward to spending more time with her in the “Battlefront II” game. Golden is also no slouch when it comes to writing action sequences – there are at least three such scenes here that are real highlights.

Simplemente una magnífica novela de star wars del nuevo canon. La trama es muy movida. La historia de introducción de los integrantes del escuadrón es como debe ser rápida. El desenlace es magnífico y uno de los destinos de ello se inesperado. Lo recomiendo.

I dont read much, but decided to give this a try because I love star wars. I have to say, reading the text with the audiobook, i was able to get really immersed into the story. Hearing explosions, baster shots, and Iden Versio herself narrate gives the feeling like you're watching a cut scene straight from the game. This is a great prequel story to the upcoming game, and made me even more excited for release. I would definitely recommend this if you're planning to play.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good character development
Reviewed in France on November 10, 2018
Despite a slightly anti-climatic ending, this is a good read. I particularly appreciated the characters, who are well developed, and it helps understand some of their motives in the video-game (which can seem a bit sudden).
I enjoyed exploring the Empire's dogma through their eyes, but also how radical some Rebel cells are. It definitely touches on the moral gray area of the Galactic Civil War.
