Review
Mystery Writers of America 2018 Grandmaster
Praise for Skeleton Hill
"Diamond is a classic—better catch him while you can."
—Marilyn Stasio, The New York Times Book Review
“Peter Lovesey is the real deal. A top master of the police procedural British subgenre, he's an ace at spinning out teasingly slow plot revelations . . . crisp prose and humane characterizations.”
—The Seattle Times, Best Crime Fiction of the Year
"Nobody can write the modern traditional detective novel as perfectly as Lovesey."
—The Denver Post
"Lovesey's novels are consistently well plotted and his characters smart and witty."
—Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
"History, humor, inspired clues, maniacal twists and a paean to the beauty of the Bath countryside. Lovesey, who’s won every prize going, deserves another for Diamond’s tenth."
—Kirkus Reviews, Starred Review
"Diamond remains one of the most realistic and human of fictional sleuths . . . another winner in this enduring series."
—Publishers Weekly, Starred Review
"The man writes flat-out great British police procedurals . . . Peter Lovesey, who has won just about every major mystery writing award on two continents, is in top form here."
—Mystery Scene
Praise for The Peter Diamond series
“Peter Diamond is impatient, belligerent, cunning, insightful, foul, laugh-out-loud funny . . . A superb series.”
—Louise Penny
“I’m jealous of everyone discovering Lovesey and Diamond for the first time—you have a wonderful backlist to catch up on. Me, all I can do is wait for the next book.”
—Sara Paretsky
“What'll it be today? A knotty puzzle mystery? A fast-paced police procedural? Something more high-toned, with a bit of wit? With the British author Peter Lovesey, there's no need to make those agonizing decisions, because his books have it all.”
—The New York Times Book Review
“Mr. Lovesey's narrative is swift, but he takes time out for local color and abundant humor, the latter springing from the book's quirky characters . . . Lovesey is a wizard at mixing character-driven comedy with realistic-to-grim suspense. And in a writing career spanning four decades, he has created a stylish and varied body of work.”
—The Wall Street Journal
“Next to Jane Austen, Peter Lovesey is the writer the tourist board of Bath, England, extols most proudly . . . The enduring draw of the Peter Diamond books derives both from the beguiling Bath cityscape and the brusque character of Diamond himself.”
—NPR

As 2 English Civil War re-enactors are digging for some stashed cold beer, they discover a leg bone in the Landsdown area of Bath, in the English countryside. They both initially suspect that the leg bone is a 400 year old specimen that belonged to one of the original fighters in the Civil War that they are reenacting, so they rebury it. One of the re-enactors, however, is a Historian at the local university, so he comes back later to retrieve the bone, thinking he has made a significant historic find. He is brutally attached from behind and struck on the head. The injury leaves him without memory of his status, address or name.
Local dogs find the bone and Peter Diamond and his team are called in to investigate. The bone is soon discovered to be only 20 years old, not a 400 year old specimen buried near a battlefield. The skeleton is headless which makes it more difficult to investigate, but soon it is revealed to be that of a young Ukrainian female who ran away from London, where she was trapped in a sex trafficking ring. Two weeks after the initial skeleton discovery, the young historian's body is found in a graveyard with his skull bashed in.
Peter Diamond thinks the crimes are connected to each other and wants to pursue the murders simultaneously, while his boss thinks the crimes are unrelated and wants to pursue separate investigations.
Lovesey's characters are genuinely likable and are well described by the author. The plot is a wonderful one and I did not guess who the "bad guys" were. There is terrific visual description of the West Country area of England. There is some English slang that I was unfamiliar with but I could look the words up on my Kindle so this did not present a problem. There is some wonderful humor, as well.
This great book makes me want to read the other "Diamond's in the Series."
this was an enjoyable read with a bit of English history during
the Civil War used as a backdrop for two murders, spaced
20 years apart. The only problem I have with the author is
the needless mention of a woman’s chest, done with some humor, which I found offensive. It was done more than once,
and served no purpose whatsoever.

Peter Lovesey creates mysteries as complex as any by the likes of Dorothy L Sayers and the masters of mystery fiction. He poses an intellectual puzzle without the need for gratuitous violence or graphic descriptions. They are a game of chess where characters are moved and scenes carefully built up and your brain is fully engaged at all times.
Skeleton Hill is superb, one of his best books to date. Peter Diamond is as acerbic and single minded as ever, trying to find the keys to two murders, linked by their location but separated by 20 years. The dual murders are investigated simultaneously and we are led to believe they may have been made by the same killer. Wisely Peter Lovesey has given Paloma, his girlfriend a secondary role, providing assistance and a sounding board to Peter Diamond but not detracting from the storyline. False clues and several suspicious characters draw you into the plot and I found the book hard to down. Like his other books I know I will enjoy re-reading this one again at a later point when I can spot the trail of subtle clues leading to the real killer. Highly recommended for all lovers or traditional mystery with a modern twist. Like it predeccesors it is cleverly written, where the reader is fully engaged at all times. This series is crying out to be put onto prime-time television. I had read that the rights had been sold several years ago but I have yet to see any signs of Peter Diamond making it to the small screen. What a wasted opportunity which I hope Peter Lovesey will try to remedy.
I was very disappointed to learn that the seller had substituted a damaged book ("last copy in stock" according to the seller's note included with the book.) I think the price charged ($29+) was already high for this book, but she accepted that it was hard to find and really wanted to read it. If it really had been "New" as per the listing, one might have been willing to accept paying that premium, but to have the seller substitute a book in what sounds more like "Acceptable" condition than "New", at that same premium price, added insult to the injury.
I love Lovesey's captivating character development, plot twists, and rich descriptions of West Country England. His dialogs are realistic, which, along with his touches of local history, make this a fun read.
