“Peter Lovesey is the real deal. A top master of the police procedural British subgenre, he's an ace at spinning out teasingly slow plot revelations . . . crisp prose and humane characterizations.” The Seattle Times

On Lansdown Hill, near Bath, a battle between Roundheads and Cavaliers that took place over 350 years ago is annually reenacted. Two of the reenactors discover a skeleton that is female, headless, and only about twenty years old. One of them, a professor who played a Cavalier, is later found murdered. In the course of his investigation, Peter Diamond butts heads with the group of vigilantes who call themselves the Lansdown Society, discovering in the process that his boss Georgina is a member. She resolves to sideline Diamond, but matters don’t pan out in accordance with her plans.

Skeleton Hill, written by Peter Lovesey, is the first Peter Diamond novel I have read, but it won't be the last. I was unfamiliar with Lovesey's work until this book was presented by my book club as a suggested read. I was entertained from the first page.

As 2 English Civil War re-enactors are digging for some stashed cold beer, they discover a leg bone in the Landsdown area of Bath, in the English countryside. They both initially suspect that the leg bone is a 400 year old specimen that belonged to one of the original fighters in the Civil War that they are reenacting, so they rebury it. One of the re-enactors, however, is a Historian at the local university, so he comes back later to retrieve the bone, thinking he has made a significant historic find. He is brutally attached from behind and struck on the head. The injury leaves him without memory of his status, address or name.

Local dogs find the bone and Peter Diamond and his team are called in to investigate. The bone is soon discovered to be only 20 years old, not a 400 year old specimen buried near a battlefield. The skeleton is headless which makes it more difficult to investigate, but soon it is revealed to be that of a young Ukrainian female who ran away from London, where she was trapped in a sex trafficking ring. Two weeks after the initial skeleton discovery, the young historian's body is found in a graveyard with his skull bashed in.

Peter Diamond thinks the crimes are connected to each other and wants to pursue the murders simultaneously, while his boss thinks the crimes are unrelated and wants to pursue separate investigations.

Lovesey's characters are genuinely likable and are well described by the author. The plot is a wonderful one and I did not guess who the "bad guys" were. There is terrific visual description of the West Country area of England. There is some English slang that I was unfamiliar with but I could look the words up on my Kindle so this did not present a problem. There is some wonderful humor, as well.

This great book makes me want to read the other "Diamond's in the Series."

Peter Lovesey is one of my favorite authors. He gets better with each book I read in his Peter Diamond Series. This one had great character development, more humor and sarcasm, but a little too convoluted plot. It was an enjoyable read but a tad below what I have found in some of his other works. For someone who hasn't read Lovesey, this would be a nice start.

Amazon alerted me about this book. I love this author and bought it based on that. I was surprised at the format. It is a small sized hardcover book. The print is a little small for my vision but I can read it. It came when it was supposed to and in perfect condition. Peter Lovesey is a British author writing crime fiction. He is so good that you forget you are reading and feel as if you are in the story. His characters are well developed without exhausting side trips. The stories all take place in and around Bath and since this is the third book of his, I have taken the time to look at Bath online. When I take my book reading break every day I want to be transported to a new place and know what it is like. i want to know how life is lived there. It is my escape from a hardworking life. These books do that. Lovesey presents logical, well thought out stories. When I get done I have to sit and try to imagine how he came up with the plot and the manner in which the story is told. His detective Peter Diamond has flaws but is determined and loves a mystery, so do I. I started with The Bloodhounds of Bath which is a story involving a crime fiction book club and has a good discussion of mysteries, crime fiction as a genre and the relationship between life and writing. My second book was the House Sitter and I loved that but felt it was quite different that the first book. Get these books and start enjoying them. the only problem with any of them (besides the small print in this one) is that they end too soon. I do think about Bath and the characters from time to time and wonder how they are.

One of the reasons I recommend Peter Lovesey to all my friends is the consistently high standard of his books. Most authors tend to flag after a dozen or so books, but not this one! He writes well, I often, quite uncharacteristically, chuckle aloud while reading and the plots are intriguing without being confusing. I enjoyed this book as much as any - and I have read all the Peter Diamond series. One thing, I would recommend that readers who are new to Peter Lovesey start at the first Diamond mystery and work their way through them, since there are always numerous references to earlier occurances. Whether or not this would leave a new reader wondering if he had missed something, I can't say, since I am aware of the background. I have no hesitation in giving Skeleton Hill five stars.

Although not as gripping as some of his other detective novels,
this was an enjoyable read with a bit of English history during
the Civil War used as a backdrop for two murders, spaced
20 years apart. The only problem I have with the author is
the needless mention of a woman’s chest, done with some humor, which I found offensive. It was done more than once,
and served no purpose whatsoever.

I'm a big fan of Peter Lovesey's mystery series starring the always-on-the-ball Peter Diamond. 'Skeleton Hill' is no exception. As an American reader, I find the story line about a group of history buffs getting together to reenact English Civil War battles fascinating. Detective Diamond, and the readers, travel around the countryside and learn quite a few interesting historical tidbits in the course of the investigation. This is another great mystery from a true master of the genre.

4.0 out of 5 stars Skeleton hill by Peter Loveesey

I must preface this review with the knowledge that I very much enjoy Peter Lovesey's Novel about Inspector Peter Diamond and his Bath team of detectives. This mystery has an imaginative plot set in the West of England. Intriguing characters as always and leaves you guessing until the end.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Diamond to add to Lovesey's crown.

Peter Lovesey's mysteries centered around Peter Diamond, Head of Bath's CID are a satisfying read. He is an accomplished writer who uses words skilfully. With simple prose and careful descriptions he creates a fully rounded and believable character. Peter Diamond is not the intellectual sleuth of many detective novels, rather a person with bull-headed certainty in his own opinion and sound common sense. He is likeable for his flaws and his credibility as a real person. The books are lightened by a gentle irony and a sense of humour.

Peter Lovesey creates mysteries as complex as any by the likes of Dorothy L Sayers and the masters of mystery fiction. He poses an intellectual puzzle without the need for gratuitous violence or graphic descriptions. They are a game of chess where characters are moved and scenes carefully built up and your brain is fully engaged at all times.

Skeleton Hill is superb, one of his best books to date. Peter Diamond is as acerbic and single minded as ever, trying to find the keys to two murders, linked by their location but separated by 20 years. The dual murders are investigated simultaneously and we are led to believe they may have been made by the same killer. Wisely Peter Lovesey has given Paloma, his girlfriend a secondary role, providing assistance and a sounding board to Peter Diamond but not detracting from the storyline. False clues and several suspicious characters draw you into the plot and I found the book hard to down. Like his other books I know I will enjoy re-reading this one again at a later point when I can spot the trail of subtle clues leading to the real killer. Highly recommended for all lovers or traditional mystery with a modern twist. Like it predeccesors it is cleverly written, where the reader is fully engaged at all times. This series is crying out to be put onto prime-time television. I had read that the rights had been sold several years ago but I have yet to see any signs of Peter Diamond making it to the small screen. What a wasted opportunity which I hope Peter Lovesey will try to remedy.

2.0 out of 5 stars Advertised and Priced as "New". Delivered copy had yellowed pages (water-damaged?)
Reviewed in Canada on June 27, 2021
My 86-yr old mother had already torn the book up & dropped it into recycle before telling me the condition of the book she received, so I can not provide photographic evidence of her claim. According to her, the yellowed pages in the book suggested to her that it had clearly been read in a bath or on the beach. I got the impression from her that the book was more in "Acceptable" condition, definitely not "New" as advertised.

I was very disappointed to learn that the seller had substituted a damaged book ("last copy in stock" according to the seller's note included with the book.) I think the price charged ($29+) was already high for this book, but she accepted that it was hard to find and really wanted to read it. If it really had been "New" as per the listing, one might have been willing to accept paying that premium, but to have the seller substitute a book in what sounds more like "Acceptable" condition than "New", at that same premium price, added insult to the injury.

Typical of Lovesey to keep you guessing until the very end, in my mind not his best (kind of bogged down in the middle chapters -compared to other Lovesey tails) but still a good story cover to cover.
I love Lovesey's captivating character development, plot twists, and rich descriptions of West Country England. His dialogs are realistic, which, along with his touches of local history, make this a fun read.
