Never Shake Hands with a War Criminal is a personal and political history told with acid humor and a loving heart. Barry Crimmins, a writer and commentator on Air America Radio, travels from a skeptical childhood in frozen upstate New York, through the founding of the Boston comedy scene, to a career as a satirist and activist. No villain is spared; no hero is forgotten. Crimmins also cuts a hilarious swath through our political tormentors, in the spirit of Mark Twain, Will Rogers, and Lenny Bruce.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Humor writer and political activist Crimmins is a hero among professional comedians for having helped launch the careers of Steven Wright, Bobcat Goldthwait and others. While he's recently gained wider recognition through his stand-up performances and his writing for Air America Radio, this funny, intelligent book could increase his audience even more. Witty and insightful, it has the potential to make Crimmins a prominent voice on the left. One-page groupings of political one-liners are interspersed between short, provocative and extremely well-written essays. Crimmins takes a comedic scalpel to various right-wing targets, including what he perceives as post-9/11 jingoism, conservative "clone candidates," Henry Kissinger (who inspired the book's title), Dennis Miller and various members of the Bush administration, especially John Ashcroft and his support of the Patriot Act ("Kaiser Ashcroft doesn't think of them as nukes—he considers them 'rapture accelerants' "). He also combines autobiographical glimpses of his youth in Skaneateles, N.Y. ("an Indian word that means 'beautiful lake surrounded by fascists' "), and his life in the 1980s managing the Ding Ho, Boston's first real comedy club, with more substantial attacks on George W. Bush's government. Unapologetically admitting to preaching to the choir, "since the choir in America really needs a night out now and then," Crimmins presents "a thoughtful resistance to the madness of an era."

Review

“Barry is hilariously funny, but more important, his humor comes out of a deep intelligence, an extraordinary understanding of the world around him and an intense commitment to social change.” –Howard Zinn

“Barry Crimmins uses his sharp sense of irony as a political weapon. In his hands, the subversive joke is the first small act of resistance.”
–Billy Bragg

“He breaks down reality in a hilarious way. He seems ticked off at everything, and when you hear him, you agree. One of the few political comedians who are really good.”
–Steven Wright

“Like a mixture of Tom Paine and Mark Twain, Crimmins mixes politics and humor with savage results.”
–Michael Blowen, The Boston Globe

Crimmins' satire can lacerate like razor wire. It's also laugh-out-loud funny. His comments on the current White House administration, and Conservatives of nearly any ilk, are biting and savagely witty. But even those who don't subscribe to the author's partisan ideology should be impressed by several thoughtful essays in this book - ruminations on his hometown near the Finger Lakes, a eulogy for a cancer-stricken friend, his fond memories as founder of the Boston comedy scene circa 1979, his introspective examination of how annual copious snowfall in Central New York state creates hearty skeptics, an encounter with a lost boy and a Good Samaritan. These essays and others show that the author is more than just a political animal. He's also a keen observer of the human condition (a hallmark trait of any fine satirist). Mainly, though, the book focuses on Crimmins' high-principled views, which are insightful, unapologetic, and often very funny.

Barry Crimmins grew up in Skaneateles, NY, and was a fixture in Boston stand-up comedy for years. We learn a lot about this, his family, and his opinions about politics today in this series of very funny essays covering topics such as 9/11, corporate corruption, Henry Kissinger, the Clintons, activism, Dennis Miller, comedy, Reagan, Air America Radio, NPR, the Iraq War, etc. Scattered between the essays are one-liners (e.g. Bush says he is eating beef and isn't vaguely concerned about the possibility of mad cow disease. Of course he isn't--the disease attacks the brain.)

If you're a progressive, there are lots of lines that will make you nod or smile or laugh. Conservatives will not enjoy this, but all others will.

The book is more than worth reading. Especially now , after his death , this is something that lingers for the good. Our luck to have this prose trace of a brave man , as good as he was stubborn. Rarely had a shirt on his back in other words...

3/01/18 @ no o’clock in the morning-
A doggedly thoughtful & wickedly funny sage, the political satirist & anti-war stalwart Barry Crimmins , died late last night @ Syracuse, New York . Besides being a tireless thorn in the side of the empire he was born into, Crimmins , a powerfully imposing bear ( hugger ) of a man raised in Skaneateles , New York , had a heart bigger than Pennsylvania & Ohio put together. He survived his childhood by placing his faith in Mickey Mantle & Yogi Berra, ( joyously discovering them amid the hiss of late-night radio static ; instantly recognizing them as dependable people a kid could count on...) then later as a young man and careful student of Mark Twain, after drafting Ernie Davis & Roberto Clemente to bolster his precious clutch of Yankees , he freely embarked on an even rougher road as a ‘volunteer’ in show-biz service to the rest of us , inspired as much by Harriet Tubman & Lenny Bruce as his life-long hero Twain. Barry always figured he could "smuggle some content “ in while we laughed . To those shocked partisans who reliably rose to their feet screaming that old chestnut at Barry in some ‘Comedy Club’ next to the Holiday Inn , " Hey , If you hate this country so much, why don’t you leave it ?…” Barry would bellow, “ Because I don’t want to be victimized by its foreign policy ! …”
I first met him on a picket line he was visiting, the sort of improvised unpaid ‘USO tour’ Barry frequently invented as he loyally roamed the battered rust-belt in between coastal gigs, keeping his eye peeled for the damage done in and out of this country the past 30 years as regular people were being regularly hammered. From Indiana to Central America… Barry Crimmins walked our beat. He ’made the road by walking...’ as they say . Really, he lunged hard at every step of it.
Comforting us in the cottages, afflicting them in the palaces…
Thank you so much, Barry. I remain astonished, though now sobbing. -John A. Joslin , electrician ( Detroit,Michigan -South of the Canadian borderline…) IBEW Local Union # 58

In this age when dishonest and careless people cloak themselves in Christianity, and when fair and balanced is anything but, it is a relief to read Barry Crimmins. Never Shake Hands with a War Criminal combines humor with humanity and courage with the truth. The chapters about Crimmins' dying friend and the Oklahoma City bombing made me cry and the chapters about surfing on the Niagara and Newt Gingrich made me laugh. And all of it made me want to stand up for what is good in each of us. I recommend this book for anyone whose soul needs a drink of something clean and refreshing.

I got an early Christmas gift - Barry Crimmins Never Shake Hands With A War Criminal and I ended up - in-between picking myself up off the floor, having tumbled from laughter - reading this tremendous work non-stop, cover-to-cover.

Crimmins is incredibly talented, writing with great clarity and conviction, without pandering for laughs. He's a master humorist, a modern day Twain ...

His 'Rushmore of Wrong-Headedness', his riff on Gingrich and more are all side-splitting ...

If you like well-written humor, run, don't walk, to your nearest bookstore (or, if you're reading this review, click back and hit the order button) to get this work ... It's tremendous

Peace

I didn't read the whole book, but spent about an hour in the back of a bookstore with a copy. This is supposed to be funny? Most of the humor(?) is the same tired crap the left has been spouting for the last 4 years. I like a good political humorist. I can laugh at jokes about conservatives, but this stuff was just mean, not the least bit funny. I kept reading, hoping to crack even a smile. Nothing. Who the hell reads this kind of thing and finds it funny? A total waste of money as was the the hour I spent. This guy needs to wake up and smell the coffee. I think he needs to widen his circle of sycophants, get a bit more varied feedback because this book is garbage
