The battlegrounds: Wall Street, the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, Niagara Falls, and, finally, the death chamber—Jonnes takes us on the tense walk down a prison hallway and into the sunlit room where William Kemmler, convicted ax murderer, became the first man to die in the electric chair.

Written in a storytelling manner, this book is a great recap of how the AC electric system was adopted & the extraordinary personalities involved. Even if you aren't a historian, knowing about these pioneers & the obstacles they overcame will give you an increased appreciation of one of the essential utilities of our world.

I initially suspected this would be a long winded, esoteric drudge full of obscure science that I would get lost in. It is anything but that. If you enjoy the high-minded, free-wheeling nature of the Gilded Age, this book is for you. Fascinating history. 10/10 would recommend.

Jill Jonnes is an author and historian with a Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University. She has received awards from the Ford Foundation and the National Endowment for the Humanities, and is the author of South Bronx Rising and Hep-Cats, Narcs, and Pipe Dreams. She lives with her family in Baltimore, Maryland.
