This novel is brilliantly deceptive as you are drawn inexorably into the lives of Faulques and his 'visitor' and the strange relationship that ever so slowly develops between them as they joust with each other while Faulques' secret pain and reason for seclusion are revealed bit by bit.In the description of the painting itself Perez-Reverte unfolds a masterful exposition not only of painting but also of the often-overlooked art of battle.In the back of my mind I have a suspicion that lurking in the sources drawn upon by the author is the relationship between Robert Capra and Gerda Taro and her death at Teruel in 1937.But whether the Mexican Suitcase formed that base is irrelevant to the spell The Painter of Battles will cast over all who read it.

Arturo Pérez-Reverte’s bestselling books, including The Club Dumas, The Flanders Panel, The Seville Communion, and the Captain Alatriste series, have been translated into thirty-four languages in fifty countries and have sold millions of copies. Pérez-Reverte was born in 1951 in Cartagena, Spain, and now lives in Madrid, where he was recently elected to the Spanish Royal Academy. A retired war journalist, he covered conflicts in Angola, Bosnia, Croatia, El Salvador, Lebanon, Libya, Nicaragua, Romania, the Persian Gulf, and Sudan, among others. He now writes fiction full-time.
