Young readers can learn about Eid, a religious holiday celebrated by Muslim families every year, as well as the Hajj pilgrimage, when Muslims travel back to Mecca for the Eid, in this picture book about Muslim culture and traditions written by Dr. Asma Mobin-Uddin and illustrated by Laura Jacobsen.

This Eid, Aneesa should be happy.  But, her parents are thousands of miles away for the Hajj pilgrimage. To cheer her up, her Nonni gives her a gift of beautiful clothes, one outfit for each of the three days of Eid. At the prayer hall, Aneesa meets two sisters who are dressed in ill-fitting clothes for the holiday. She soon discovers that the girls are refugees – they had to leave everything behind when they left their native country to live in America.  Aneesa, who can't stop thinking about what Eid must be like for them, comes up with a plan – a plan to help make it the best Eid holiday ever.
School Library Journal says: "[A] beautifully composed story. . . . This is a welcome contribution, giving much-needed visibility to a celebration observed by over ten million people in North America." And Library Media Connection says: "After reading this book, children will have a greater appreciation for the Muslim culture and will have no problem realizing that love is an action word."

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Aneesa, apparently living in the U.S., misses her parents, who are in Saudi Arabia for the pilgrimage hajj, but she enjoys celebrating Eid al-Adha with her grandmother. They go to the prayer hall to hear a sermon. Afterwards, over doughnuts, she befriends two girls and learns that they have escaped from a war-torn country. Later, Aneesa talks with her grandmother about refugees and gains an ally in her plan to help her new friends, who appear to be poor and hungry. Although the text of this picture book is a little longer than most, the clearly written story will interest many children, including those who have never heard of Eid al-Adha. Jacobsen’s pastel-pencil pictures illustrate the story with warmth. Appended are a glossary, a pronunciation guide, and explanations of references that may be unfamiliar to children. By the writer of My Name Is Bilal (2005), this is a welcome addition to holiday collections. Grades K-3. --Carolyn Phelan

A Great Book (For Muslims or Non-Muslims alike) I purchased 2 (one for the classroom and one for my own family) and it really gives the meaning behind the holiday (its rare to find a good book to portray that) and the pictures are beautiful and capturing ... Highly Recoomend for every family and Teacher (that wants to teach a lesson on the holiday or just extracting the main lesson that the whole book sends "sharing is caring and feels great"

My daughter loves this book. It is a great spring board to discuss how to help those in need in simple ways. It touches on the sensitive issue of refugees and their struggles in a simple way for children to understand. Great book.

I truly enjoyed reading this book. The illustrations brought it to life. I donated the book to the local elementary school and they loved it. What a nice way to make young students understand other cultures and traditions.
