The Shield, Vol. 1: Daughter of the Revolution Kindle & comiXology

3.5 3.5 out of 5 stars 13 ratings

Over the centuries, in our nation's times of need, a supernatural force appears to battle back the enemies of the United States: THE SHIELD.

Today, the country--the whole world--is on the edge of chaos. The middle class is dying as the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. Global warming's effects on the environment are drastic and dramatic, with superstorms and deadly droughts a common occurrence. The government increases its grip on the lives of ordinary people, controlling information and curtailing freedoms and privacy. For some, the government itself has become an enemy of the people, and revolution is on the minds of Americans all across the country.

The Shield returns--but what happens when she's not sure who the enemy is?

A modern action and conspiracy thriller by bestselling novelists Adam Christopher and Chuck Wendig featuring the dynamic artwork of David Williams, THE SHIELD: DAUGHTER OF THE REVOLUTION gives readers a topical, relevant and jarring new take on the classic hero.

THE SHIELD, VOL. 1: DAUGHTER OF THE REVOLUTION collects the first story arc of the ongoing THE SHIELD comic book series.

Every few years, Archie Publications remembers that they own some superhero characters (The Mighty Crusaders), and they try to capitalize on them. They publish a few issues, grow alarmed when sales aren't immediately promising, then they cancel the line. This has been going on for decades.

They tried again with the Shield, one of their Mighty Crusaders. The new writers updated the character, found a solid and talented artist, and the first two and settled in for a long run. The first two and two-thirds issues are five star material. This stuff is superheroes done right. Then the Archie group grew alarmed that sales weren't promising, and told the creators to shut it down after the third issue had been completed--and a fifth issue already commissioned. The cover for #5 was used as a header for the contents page of this trade paperback. There was some hasty rewriting, a new and less talented artist brought in for issue #4 (and, I suspect, for the last of #3) and the end result was awkward and unsatisfying. Two star worthy.

This could'a been a contender. Thanks to the faint-hearted corporate execs at Archie, it will end up in the remainder bins. The Shield deserved better.

I wanted to enjoy this comic more than I did. I’m a fan of the Shield--and for the record, the character was created before Captain America--despite the various incarnations Archie Comics, the Red Circle, the Dark Circle and even DC throw at us, which contradict all the others. Enter Victoria Adams, a bit of a different take on the character who has been fighting off and on since the Revolution. This story from Adam Christopher and Chuck Wendig puts her in a modern setting but the pace is too fast--only four issues--to really offer much besides a series of battles against dark forces or to really flesh out the character. There is a lot of potential here but it did not quite click. Of course, then they changed her character and situation in the “Mighty Crusaders” so there’s not real payoff or development for the long haul. Not a bad collection of comics but not a good one either. I’d offer 3.25 stars if possible which rounds down.

Cliché of "all that is good is corrupt and any attempt to do good is to be mocked." Shame to see one of the earliest comics examples of being a good example, used for propaganda against those who still try to live up to the Dream.

Good premise and origin story for the newest version of Archie's Shield character.
Art is good and all the bonus covers as extras add to the book.
