"A dark feminist tale spun with blood and gold. Must read!"Ā ā€“DhonielleĀ Clayton, New York Times bestselling author of The Belles
Ā
Sixteen-year-old Deka lives in fear and anticipation of the blood ceremony that will determine whether she will become a member of her village. Already different from everyone else because of her unnatural intuition, Deka prays for red blood so she can finally feel like she belongs.

But on the day of the ceremony, her blood runs gold, the color of impurityā€“and Deka knows she will face a consequence worse than death.

Then a mysterious woman comes to her with a choice: stay in the village and submit to her fate, or leave to fight for the emperor in an army of girls just like her. They are called alakiā€“near-immortals with rare gifts. And they are the only ones who can stop the empire's greatest threat.

Knowing the dangers that lie ahead yet yearning for acceptance, Deka decides to leave the only life she's ever known. But as she journeys to the capital to train for the biggest battle of her life, she will discover that the great walled city holds many surprises. Nothing and no one are quite what they seem to beā€“not even Deka herself.

The start of a bold and immersive fantasy series for fans of Children of Blood and Bone and Black Panther.

Unbelievably amazing and powerful. From examining the power of how our histories are told, to questioning the seeming imperviousness of the patriarchy, to the depths of unresolved trauma and how it shapes our every subsequent action, to the power of embracing one's true self and the power of one's heritage, this novel delights and challenges the reader to ask themselves who they are, what their story is, and what power they hold that they've been taught to deny. I'm not sure I will ever have the words to reflect the power this novel has to encourage the reader to recognize their own beauty, in the face of a world constantly trying to convince you of your impurity. Especially for the melanated, not the least of which is the beauty of your skin. Finishing this novel I wanted to cheer, to sob, to roar in frustration against societal powers, to rage against every form of oppression, and to take arms on behalf of every person persecuted for simply being themselves.

This book is an absolute 10/10! The descriptions, the imagery, the character building, the hidden narrative on patriarchy; I absolutely loved it!
