"
A fantastical story of a charming witch. . . . [that] offers a glimpse into a few aspects of Japanese culture.... This new translation is perfect." —School Library Journal

"
Descriptive and whimsical, and both characters’ names and their appearances in Onoda’s anime-inflected illustrations create a Japanese-inspired fantasy world. The characters’ quirkiness creates the feeling that Kiki’s future will be filled with countless friends and adventures . . . An enchanting, gently humorous all-ages family read-aloud.” —Kirkus Reviews

"Kadono's
endearing, encouraging novel memorably shows that though the new can be scary, it can also be wonderful and make one a better person." —Booklist

Good book. Beware of bad book binding.
5 Stars
Good book. Beware of bad book binding.
A+ for the book and the story it contains. D- for the book binding. It was listed as new when I purchased it. When I received it the book already felt a little fragile so it was put carefully on a shelf until I was ready to read it. Opening the book for the very first time to finally read it I have come to find that the pages and binding have completely separated from the cover. I plan on repairing it myself as it’s not worth my time to return it.

Adorable story, love it! I love the anime and the book does not disappoint! Surprisingly relatable. It took me back to when I was 12.

What a great story of getting older and finding out who you are and what you’re meant to do. While it’s meant for younger people, adults can enjoy it as well. It’s sweet and endearing.

I was introduced to Kiki's Delivery Service through Studio Ghibli's film adaptation and was very excited to get my hands on this translation of this classic (I didn't know about the 2003 english publication). The book is refreshingly different from the film (similar to my experience with Howl's Moving Castle by the late Diana Wynne Jones) and introduces so much lore about Kiki's world. I especially like the details about the history and current state of magic. The book doesn't have one strong overarching drama, but instead, a series of smaller, episodic plot lines. I didn't expect this style of story-telling, probably because I was biased by the film, but in the end, I found it relaxing and always looked forward to reading the next chapter. I've read that there are some errors in the translation and some lines missing, but I'm unfamiliar with the original and don't speak Japanese, so I didn't notice. I also enjoyed the illustrations.

While this book works as a stand alone story, I just learned that there are more book in the series. I would love to discover that these book have been translated into english, but I'm not getting my hopes up.

This is a very cute, easy read. Very different movie and I like it. It's hard enough to enjoy a coming of age book, especially. What about a witch.

Kiki’s Delivery Service is a fiction book suitable for 7-100 year olds. The book is about a girl named Kiki becoming a good witch. Kiki has a cat named Jiji. Witches are “endangered species” where Kiki and Jiji live because witch magic started disappearing and less and less people want to be witches. Kokiri, Kiki’s mother, has only two magic powers left. These two magic powers are making sneeze-medicine and flying on a broom. Kiki decided to learn from her mom how to fly on a broom. When Kiki went to become a witch, the town people sent her off to a new place (Kiki’s choice) for one year before coming back home. During that time, Kiki had to find a job to make money, so she could get food and shelter. A lot of towns already had their own witches and they didn’t want two witches so it was hard for Kiki to find a place to accommodate her. Later, she found a family to move in and she helped the family deliver a package. This inspired her to have her own delivery service.

This book is captivating because Kiki and Jiji keep having different adventures. When there is a problem Kiki and Jiji are about to fix, another problem comes up, and they have to fix them one after another. There are also several pictures in the book that are small, but very pretty and detailed, classic Japanese anime. My favorite picture is the one on the front cover because it captures Kiki’s character and lays a good ground for readers to start the adventure.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fofo e divertido, mas edição deixou a desejar.

5.0 out of 5 stars Such a cute read!

I can't believe I discovered only recently that Hayao Miyazaki's 'Kiki's Delivery Service' was actually based on a book! So, of course, as a huge fan of the film, I had to read it! 🤭

This story is so, so cute.

-

Kiki is a young witch who is coming of age, and as such, she has to spend one year far from her family, in a different town.

She arrives in Koriko, a lovely town by the sea, that doesn't have a witch, and starts her very own business: Kiki's Delivery Service.

All along the year she spends in this big city, Kiki will discover new people, make friends, and learn new things as well.

-

It really is a sweet story, easy to read as it is for young readers, and the characters are all very fun and cute.

It's been lovely to read about Kiki's growth all along her year in Koriko. ❤️
